Can we please stick to bagging Downer.

My favourite was a few years ago when some old bloke joined Downer on stage with a "No War" sign. In a later interview Downer said he wasn't worried as he was 6'2" and pretty fit.

Well done dickhead, you can beat up a 75 year old pacifist.

You guys are talking through your prejudices.
I've known him since 1996, and he's a good bloke, admittedly with a somewhat odd sense of humour.

You have just proven my point by spouting another prejudice. You really have no way of knowing whether that is true or not!

No prejudice here Psyber. I think his mother is a fantastic person a "true" liberal. Not someone who sold their soul to John Howard's "drys" like her son did.

I disagreed with him to his face about both the workplace arrangements and the handling of the David Hicks affair and he was civil about it, if non-commital.

His dilemma was that having stood down from the leadership in favour of John Howard, for what he saw at the time as the greater good, and pledged loyalty in doing so to JH's leadership, he was, in his view, bound to honour that committment and not sow dissension in the party. I think he genuinely believed in the rightness of most of the policies, and declined to comment when he disagreed, as part of that pledge of loyalty. Had JH stepped down in office and another leader taken over then he would have been free to speak his mind.

Personally, I favour a less right wing position than was manifest in government under either Howard, or Hawke/Keating.

That's were we differ. No dilemma in my book. You either have a backbone or you don't. Downer quite clearly doesn't same as his mate Costello.

He can't be that if he believed what he was doing was right for the good of the country, and you don't know his position about wider moral issues.
This is just hate filled ranting, as well as abusive.

I know reason won't work on this thread though so I'll leave you to enjoy playing with your prejudice and bigotry.

There is obviously something personal about this that isn't being shared...

Wont be long before there is an avenue of silver spoons from Adelaide to Port Adelaide given Foley's propensity to throw so much money that way - opening bridges, expressways, tramlines, waterfront developments. Oh the irony - he lives in Norwood along with the Premier.

this is were grey area have started to appear in all forms of politics. blue collar workers need a party we can follow that will look after the needs of blue collar working familys. labor is the better of two evils imo.

Labor will never be like that again best on hill. They have consciously shifted to the right to get into the middle ground of politics and it has meant they won the Federal election as a result, along with all the states and territories. They will find it much harder to hold on to power if they shifted back to the left again so realistically, they do what they can for the working class, ignore the upper class and put prime attention to the middle ground. It's not only an Australian trend, it is worldwide.

How long has Downer been in politics? About 20 years? How can it be prejudicial to bag someone after that long? Isn't prejudice pre judging someone? Bigotry and hatred, sounds like 11 years of coalition government.

Maybe you should try reason before you abandon it.

Crap, Downer served his country for 24 years, rightly or wrongly, he gave up his own time, time with his family, probably listened to endless complaints from constituents, the majority of people in his electorate saw fit to re-elect him for over two decades, are you so arrogant to suggest the good people of Mayo are stupid? Anyway, if we are going to sink to personal abuse, how about this? what have you done with your jealous little chip on the shoulder? What have you achieved? If you are 10% the man Downer is you're doing OK.
