Fitzgibbon quits as Defence Minister
Joel Fitzgibbon has resigned as Defence Minister, after saying he did not fully comply with the ministerial code of conduct.
Mr Fitzgibbon said he had quit after it was revealed his ministerial office was used for a meeting between a big US health insurer, Humana, his brother, who heads the health fund NIB, and government and veterans' affairs officials. Late on Tuesday night Mr Fitzgibbon told Parliament he had failed to disclose a night in a hotel room, worth $450. It was provided by the health fund NIB, headed by his brother Mark, as part of attending the State of Origin rugby league match in Brisbane on June 11 last year. After the allegations were reported in Fairfax newspapers in March, Mr Fitzgibbon said he had failed to declare gifts - two trips to China and a suit - paid for by Ms Liu.

Wow. From the moment I started posting on here Jimmy has been the ultimate defender of the Liberal Party. Noting a skewed right-wing bias on here I decided to take up the slack for the Left. Funny you didn't mention anything about sniping with all of those Rannwatch threads. If you can't take the fact I'm one of the very few people on here that defends the left that's your problem, my comment was made in jest with Jimmy.

Does anyone read "Green Left Weekly" ? I havn't seen anyone hawking that paper for years, it used to be a regular thing in the Exeter (Rundle St) at lunchtimes. I'd almost forgotten about it.

I guess it is all in the perspective. I agree it is rather Conservative [UK style] in its orientation, but since it is also fairly liberal [i.e. democratic] in its approach to issues its perspective suits me.
As I have said before I am liberal first and conservative second, but not committed to the forms that come with capital letters.
I see most publications from the "left" as somewhat authoritarian in tone - it was authoritarianism that turned me away from the "left" after my voting for Gough Whitlam in 1972.
I liked the ideals, but not the righteousness and arrogance that became manifest later when not everone - including the voters in November 1975 - fell into line..

Then you've got the Australian version run by Peter Costello's father in law (and author of his memoirs) and we all know how extreme Costello was what with his far-right religious friends, being a founder of the extremist H.R. Nicholls Society and of course the architect of one of the most ill-fated policies in recent history, WorkChoices which Costello failed to even mention in his book.

So let me try to get a handle on all this ...

It's no big deal that a staffer who worked for a political party's spokeswoman on women's issues resigned because he groped a bunch of women at function because the other side does bad things as well and that's what we expect from them anyway. They're all liars and cheats with no morals but people will die in the ditch for one party over another?

Did I go near to getting that right?

Nah you don't defend the Liberal Party. Everytime something like this pops up you jump straight in with an "oh well they're just as bad as each other". Yet again trying to shift the focus on to Labor over the naivety and sheer stupidity of MHS who could very well have been set-up by one of the leadership challengers in his own party.

I'm all for the abolition of political parties and developing a system of locally based representation with decisons based on consensus or [substantial] majority.
Of course you would need an executive to make urgent decisons, which could then be ratified or reversed after due consideration.
You would have no trouble getting the rabid supporters of all the parties to unite in opposing that and telling us how it couldn't possible work...

It is like the time I told Alexander Downer, face to face, that I thought we had made a mistake agreeing to pay politicians after Federation and should reverse it. He was amused by the idea that "even the Democrats would join us in opposing that!"

Yeah, nice. Perhaps next time you could ask Downer about that $300m in the AWB scandal. As the great PJK once called him "the idiot son of the aristocracy".

If I was ever invited to dinner with Keating; I would politely decline - Hawke or Whitlam; I would be honoured to be even asked and would spend all evening asking them questions

The worst thing that ever happened to this country was the legitimisation of Keating by having him elected in his own right......no hang on.....it was the unfortunate outcome of the rejection of GST. The Liberal Party were too honest in their intentions - something the Labor Party would never do.
