"The major advertising spend, which bypasses the Government's own advertising rules on the grounds of an "urgent and compelling reason", has been designed to do what Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has so far failed to sell his controversial 40 per cent mining super profits tax."

The only urgent and compelling reason I can think of is 50% of the population aren't for it and there's an election coming up!

What a farce

He has a long way to go to catch up to the Howard government in the advertising spending department.

Did the mining council and mining companies think the government wasn't going to respond to their ad campaign?

I agree the Howard govt use of taxpayers $$ on advertising was abominable. As were many of their policies.

My point is, however, that the current govt has reneged on what they set out to do, a promise they made to the Australian people...and their explanation for their actions is stupefying. This is not an urgent and compelling issue, just a result of poor political strategy. Their advertising campaign could backfire anyway...risky stuff, with more than a hint of desperation IMO

The Rudd Government go directly against a policy they fought for (Govt Spending $$$ on ads) and then the Libs take the high moral ground over the backflip. Spare me. Never vote for a political party that starts with L.
