Should the States be abolished?

We should only keep the States for sporting reasons.
We are the most over governed 'democracy' on earth.
Let's get rid of this anachronism and the useless politicians that go along with it.

I'd support the abolishing of the states with a couple of provisos:
1. We need to move the national capital to somewhere like Darwin or Alice Springs as the halfway between Melbourne and Sydney solution has had its day. The pollies need a wider perspective!
2. We need to make sure the local councillors don't then get away with demanding they step up a tier and get paid as politicians rather than just getting limited allowances.

The other option is dig a moat around Victoria, NSW, and southern Qld, to isolate them and form a new Western Confederacy of Australia. ;)

I think the best step forward is to begin nationalising things, starting with universal road laws across Australia and the Federal police being the complete police force across Australia. Public health needs to be run by the Federal government and there are no doubt various more examples of how much could be saved by taking these actions and the standard of living in Australia raised accordingly.

Yeah and move the SA-Vic border to its correct position ie 141 degree East Longitude...2-3km east of where it currently is!

After the last decade, we're all ready for...

NSW Inc.

Exhibit A for the prosecution:

The NSW Labor disaster (you'd hardly call them a government.)

Corruption, cronyism, nepotism, paedophilia, breathtaking incompetence and on and on it goes.

Thanks for nothing Bob, Walt, Carl, Kristina, Mr. Costa, Fat Joe, Fast Eddie, Karl, Mark, The Rooz and the rest of the gang that couldn't shoot straight.

Couldn't even get the state flower on the government logo right.

Looks more like a lotus than a Waratah...

... and the f@%#ers shouldn't get any Murray water as the NSW border is officially on the south bank of the river. :-bd

I haven't voted .But keep the states cut out the state governments .Have Adelaide city council run the entire city and suburbs of Adelaide , same with all the other major cities .Smaller cities could be worked out along the way like major regional councils.
Federal government runs everything else Roads helath laws etc etc.
And then make council elections compulsory!

One option may be to reorganise councils based on Federal Electorate boundaries then the local Councils could lobby the MP easily.
However, we would still have to watch they didn't get away with the inevitable bid to become paid as politicians as part of the reorganisation.
We'd be even worse off financially if that happened.

[ I'm not even entirely convinced we should have started paying MPs at all in 1901.]

you make a good point sojourner. Utilities and other things should be nationalised then piss the state governments off and open the parliament and government houses up as art galleries, museums, back packer hostels and emergency accom for refugees - especially those who burn our flag.
Local government (councils) would need to be seriously reigned in and have the riot act read to them about nepotism, corruption, dodgy developments and overseas junkets.
I think we would prosper.

Option 4: Have Victoria secede from the Commonwealth.

Seriously though, whenever I take an interest in anything political, that requires action and governing, the state government seems to throw their hands in the air, and pass the buck to the Federal Government, and vice versa.

Frustrates me to no end.

One government, one ultimate responsibility.

I lived in Vale Park when it was transferred from Enfield Council to Walkerville, and was on the transfer group committee.
The transfer to the allegedly less efficient smaller council went well - footpaths were fixed, rates went down, property values went up! 8)

My view is that larger councils are more efficient only until they reach the size where the critical mass of bureaucrats that bogs everything down is reached.
They same applies to other organisations.

Yes, if for no other reason than we move to Eastern Standard Time. I think it'd be so much easier for everyone.

I'm sure the folks living in SA's west would love that. Most of SA is west of Adelaide.
Personally, I find our existing Summer time a pain - it is tolerable about this time of year but they start it too early and end it too late.

It is half an hour ahead of true local time in the west normally and 1.5 hours ahead of it right now.
The extra half hour makes that 1 hour and 2 hours..
We are on Warrnambool time before we move to Summer time.
