SA Lotteries will be sold to a private company as the State Government moves to overcome risks from online gambling.

Treasurer Jack Snelling today announced the Government would licence SA Lotteries to a private operator.

The Government will forgo an annual dividend from SA Lotteries of about $20 million, in exchange for a large up-front hit.

Mr Snelling refused to reveal what period the licence would be issued for or what price the Government expected.

It's just pathetic policy. I remember the promises that whichever govt it was that sold off electricity, "It will keep prices down because of competition". I just hate the way govt of both sides sell off anything they can - all they can see is the next election and nothing beyond that. Makes me sick.

Why do companies buy these things? Because they can see it will be profitable over time. Not the govt though! Who the **** advises these wankers?

I am not sure if they need the money or if its just a good excuse to get rid of being responsible for x no of employees. Must be getting close to the point where there is nothing left to privatise, - unless they have a look at the public school system and the private management model used interstate.

It's the money they need. Now, and now. Upfront and immediately. What gets me is that apparently this and the forest (3 forward cycles) sales are not privatisation. Nor is selling crown land to pay for redevelopment - eg Glenside and the Largs Police Academy.

I'm also waiting for someone to ask when it is OK to make election and budget promises, and then "defer" them. There is a lot of that happening lately. I understand the financial predicament but surely you fulfil one lot of promises before making new ones? I'm thinking of the new prison, the QEH upgrade, the tram extension to the Port (IIRC), the 2.5% wage cap for all public service employees that has now been overlooked for special people who are deemed to be worthy of 15% or 17%, for example; Funnily enough, taxpayers are still paying for Bernard Finnegan's political staff because he walked and no one has replaced him.

Thats correct Squawk but they are working in the acting ministers office's as i understand. For example his IR staff are working in Conlon's office.

yes wyc bloods - they are split between Conlon and Gago but are surplus to their existing staff levels. In other words, both have more staff than any other Minister at the moment because they have inherited extra staff.

My point is that these extra staff are associated with a 15th Cabinet Minister. Now there are 14, then they shouldn't be needed. After all, previous governments have operated with 12 Ministers. In tight fiscal times with the axe being taken to the public service, one wonders why the pollies arent leading by example - Cabinet has downsized by one Minister, so why haven't the staffing allocations?

The work doesnt decrease if the Portfolio's are handed over, hence the requirement of the staff. I would also suggest that these employees contracts cannot be simply torn up.... very simplistic way of looking at things!

Treachery at it underhanded best. The depths to which both dominate sides of politics will go is bloody mind boggling. The gaming industry can't wait to get their hands on SA Lotteries, believe it. And the Forest SA asset sale will go down in history as the stupidest decision in recent times. The production of timber as a carbon capture mechanism is impossible to quantify in dollar terms now let aloan in 70 years. Snelling and Rann and their mate Fooley will go down in history as the worst political operators this state has ever seen. They make Bannon and Olsen look like geniuses.

Even sadder is the fact that most Sth Australians have got an attention span of about 12 months. Labour a shoe in at the next state election. You can bet your house on Rau rolling out some big carrots in about 18 months time and continue through to election time 2014. Happy days for Labour SA

I would say Labor have no chance whatsoever in 2014.

A forecast budget surplus of $660m+ at election time in 2014 should be a nice little war chest to offer up some treats from, R&B.
