Gillard does not want to meet the Dalai Lama?

Postby Sojourner » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:59 pm

A little surprised to read that Prime Minister Gillard has refused to meet the Dalai Lama whilst he is on his Australian trip at present? She seems happy enough to meet anyone from Israel or Turkey who like the Tibetans live in occupied territory? When Oprah Winifrey came she was more than happy to meet with her also, yet the spiritual leader of Tibet as well as the various millions that affiliate themselves with Buddhism can not get 10 mins of her time?

Both Bob Brown and Tony Abbott seem to be quite okay with meeting him, Since when is the ALP beholden to the policy of the Communist Party of China to exile the Dalai Lama and to support that objective?

But why does she HAVE to? Storm in a teacup for mine.
He's no longer the head of a 'nation'. Now he's just a famous icon and all his meetings ever are are photo ops to say "I met this famous icon".
Great bloke, no doubt. But a vital meeting for our nation's leaders? Well it's up to them, I reckon.

Would Julia Gillard make time for the Pope or for the Archbishop of Canterbury? How about the General of the Salvation Army? How is it that Christian leaders are considered different to a Buddhist leader?

Surely Julia can choose who to meet and who not to meet? This Lama guy reminds me of that boring screeching little bishop Tutu. Products of their own PR machine. They are irrelevant - who cares

Sorry to go off topic and I might be living in a bubble, but the Israelis only live in occupied territory because they occupied a fair chunk of land that doesn't belong to them.

I suspect the Tibetans have a slightly different story ...

Whether they are irrelevant or not all depends on whether you value human rights. I personally do. Just a little about them:

Archbishop Tutu has been active in the defence of human rights and uses his high profile to campaign for the oppressed. He has campaigned to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, homophobia, transphobia, poverty and racism. Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism in 1986, the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005,[1] and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

The 14th Dalai Lama (religious name: Tenzin Gyatso, shortened from Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, born Lhamo Dondrub,[2] 6 July 1935) is the 14th and current Dalai Lama. Dalai Lamas are the most influential figures in the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, although the 14th has consolidated control over the other lineages in recent years. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, and is also well known for his lifelong advocacy for Tibetans inside and outside Tibet.

Irrelevant??? Not to millions of people around the world.

Cheers

1 Mate, it's would have, not would of

2 It's orang utan, not orangatan.

3 There are no orang utans in Tibet.

No Australian PM (lib or Lab) has met or likely ever will meet the Dalai Lama.

Something about mining and exports comes to mind. ;)
