I disagree, but that's what his own side thinks.

The difference that one vote made three years ago is quite astonishing. He surely still has some supporters within the liberal party. Almost seems to be the more modern Alexander Downer for the Liberals.

Is there any chance he has become disillusioned with the current Liberal Party and might sit as an independent Liberal, perhaps shoring up Gillard's majority?

Wouldn't have thought so. It wasn't all that long ago that his seat of Wentworth has very hotly contested and he only just scraped through. Whilst he might be able to bring some of that vote with him, i would assume that many are die hard libs and vote for the party not the person. Still think he also holds desires to be the liberal leader again in the future, just like Rudd and Labor.
