Process them on the mainland.

FFS, all the hundreds of millions of dollars we've blown under Howard and now this govt for nothing when the vast majority get let in anyway.

My boss was really crapped off about this today...
Why on earth would we NOT want to get asylum seekers taken elsewhere (that's the gist of what he told me it was about)???

Its interesting, Gillard and many ALP supporters have been screaming about how bad it is that Tony Abbott wont stop attacking them - then they cop a massive King Hit from the Greens in the form of their Malaysian solution being blown out of the water, Abbott has nothing to do with this high court challenge, yet reaps the benefit of GIllard being painted as weak and ineffectual!

What can she do? if she accepts it to appease the left and then its the situation with many swing voters of Beazley and the Tampa all over again, challenge it and again face the wrath of the Left. Abbott must be just about wetting himself right now! =))

It is actually a crying shame that this is even a political issue at all. It should be about human rights for people who are suffering badly in this world. Australia only takes in 0.2% of the world's refugees. Surely we can show some compassion and allow onshore processing? As stated earlier, over 98% of people who arrive by boat seeking asylum in Australia eventually gain refugee status. Also, why the big fuss about asylum seekers arriving by boat? The vast majority arrive by plane and yet nothing about these is ever said by either political party because these people are not as visually dramatic. A much higher proportion of asylum seekers who arrive by plane are not as genuine as those who arrive by boat. Only about half of these receive refugee status. If the parties truly wanted to stop asylum seekers coming to Australia, they should start with those coming by plane. However, in my eyes, all asylum seekers should be given a fair opportunity to be assessed for refugee status. Have some concern for humanity, Australia! How would we feel if we were the ones fleeing persecution and threats of death?

Sojourner, it was not the Greens who initiated the High Court challenge. Just some very concerned workers for humanitarian rights, of no particular political persuasion.

I would concede that the actual Greens party did not initiate the challenge, yet its fairly obvious that their supporters did! Either way I am sure if we go and ask Lee Rhiannon or anyone else in the Greens how they felt about the challenge and the outcome of it they would be very much pleased over it and embracing it as something they give endorsement as a group towards.

As to the actual issue of Boat People there are two things that stick out to me, one is how dangerous the trips are and how many people have died tragically making the trips, no one opposes refugees coming to Australia, I would hope that no one endorses the boat trips to get here and I dont feel that is clear enough from many supporters of refugees.

The Second issue where Gillard can immediantly change things is to go and deal with issues that cause people to become refugees and including if its simply as an economic refugee. Take the "Fair Trade" industry and specifically in areas of Africa where many refugees originate from. All it takes is for Gillard to have the courage to put a bill through the parliament banning outright the sale of non fair trade coffee and chocolate in Australia. The result is that people in those areas of Africa suddenly get fair wages, education and the things they need to have a fair go as contrasted to the conditions of slavery that they currently work under. If Gillard or Abbott are serious about stopping the boats then it needs to start here. The Liberals have already had a fair trade bill relating to vending machines in parliament house knocked back by the ALP, I would suggest that the ball lies squarely in Gillards court and she needs to stand up and take action over it if the problem is to be dealt with.

Sojourner,
I wish it were that easy. If you were to ban the sale of all products that were made overseas where workers were not paid adequately for their effort, we would probably be banning a huge amount of imports and sending a number of businesses into financial ruin (admittedly, I do like your idea though). However, do you own a pair of sports shoes or cotton shirts? If so, it is quite likely that these would have been made by workers working in sweatshop conditions for very little pay. We would need to ban the importation of all of these products. Additionally, Australia would quite likely have a trade embargo placed on it by those nations, placing more businesses in financial trouble.
In theory, great idea that I support. In practice, very very difficult to gain public approval for.

Additionally, the vast majority of refugees in the world come from Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq. Those coming to Australia by boat are, in the main, from Afghanistan and Iraq. The policy of banning non-fair trade products would do absolutely nothing to stop the numbers coming from these countries.

I think we should just listen to Sara Hansen-Young and try and get as many of the 43million refugees around the world into Australia before it is too late. They can then take over and siphon off the mining cash and force us to do all the work. Close the beaches, cancel football, cricket, netball, basketball, soccer. Get rid of the Olympic and Commonwealth games. Chuck all the girls out of schools. Make them wear wheat bags on their heads, cut off our hands if we steal something and make us attend religious ceromonies every other day and learn how to dismantle an AK47 and build a bomb in a vest. We can then become asylum seekers and head off to ... er, NZ.

Exactly the sort of attitude which has earned Australia the tag of being a racist nation overseas. Provide evidence of where any refugees into Australia have even remotely shown signs of doing anything along those lines.

Surely they are not the same person. High Court decision has definitely thrown a spanner in the works. All we need is for some little country town to establish a detention (or is that processing) centre.
