Not sure what it achieves, on the last occasion it was tried they simply set fire to the boats so that they had to then rescue them, not sure that a Australian Navy Vessel can just enter Indonesian Waters and drop people off at the local port?

Another brain fart by Abbott and yet more evidence he's not suitable to be PM, however Gillard's not exactly treating the position with the respect it deserves either.
We're poorly served with the rubbish leading the two big parties currently.

Heard someone senior from the Defence Force say the other day they would probably ignore this direction as they wouldn't be prepared to breach International Law.

You are required to provide assistance to vessels in need in international waters.
You can't just tell them to piss off unless their vessel is stable. Which of course they will ensure that it is not.
Less than 10% come by boat. Remember that. What the **** do we spend this much time over 10%. What about the other 90%, my word talk about pissing money away for no reason.

They just dont want them back - mind you, they could charge them another transit tax
It would be interesting to know how many of these aliens have visas in and out of Indonesia on the way through.
Maybe, Indonesia just want to pass on the problem to Australia - far less work just to let them go through
