Peter Slipper

So this guy turned on the Liberals to get the plum speaker's job. At the time it was a massive political coup that allowed Gillard to not need Andrew Wilkie and so she saved a bunch of money by not going ahead with his desired pokie reforms. At the time, we knew he'd been the subject of various allegations but nothing really had stuck. The media were even talking about the possibility of the Liberals releasing a heap of info on him that would embarass the government so bad they would wish they'd never poached him.

However, it appears a Labor staffer is doing that for them and in a massive way. There have been some very serious allegations made about Slipper in the Federal court by one of his advisors regarding sexual harassment and unwanted sexual advances. Among the complaint is a number of SMS messages that Slipper allegedly sent. If these messages are indeed from Slipper, this story could very quickly escalate into the biggest scandal since the dismissal.

The reason Slipper was open to being poached and bribed with the Speaker appointment was that the Liberals were already pressuring him to step down once they had picked up on his other behaviour.
The ALP must have already had some idea why he was under pressure in the Liberal Party and may be open to a bribe.

This particular situation appears to have been better hidden from both parties and has caught the ALP with their pants down.
They'll have to cosy up the Andrew Wilkie an Christine Milne again when the Slipper gets the boot!

He's decided to stand down ... http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/nati ... 6334810136

PETER Slipper has stood aside as Speaker of the House of Representatives, following allegations of "unwanted sexual advances" on a male staffer.

He arrived back in Australia this morning and released a statement saying he "emphatically'' denied allegations he sexually harassed a former staffer.

"The allegations include both a claim of criminal behaviour and claim under civil law,'' he said.

Any allegation of criminal behaviour was grave and should be dealt with in a manner that showed appropriate regard to the integrity of Australia's democratic institutions and to precedent, he said.

"As such, I believe it is appropriate for me to stand aside as Speaker while this criminal allegation is resolved.''

The allegation by former aide James Ashby was incorrect, Mr Slipper said.

"Once it is clear they are untrue I shall return to the Speakership,'' he said.

Whatever mate, I'm just looking forward to when the people can reward the government and the greens for all they have done for us. Hopefully they'll have enough members for a footy team.
