Watch Gillard's leadership come under fire now! The Feds sit next week and with this result and the upcoming polls not expecting to be flattering to Labor I am starting to think a challenge and an early election could occur.

Considering Federal ALP only hold 3 seats in WA, this result doesn't mean that much with regards to the next federal election.

NSW and Queensland will determine the next federal election result.

An interesting stat is that the Nats have received about 6% of the statewide vote and may win 8 seats, whilst the Greens have received around 8% of the statewide vote with an expected zero seats.

Goes to show the stark difference in receiving concentrated votes in a small number of electorates rather than broader but less concentrated votes across the state.

Probably a little unusual to see an incumbent government get re-elected by a stronger margin. Don't think the competition was up to much and they point blank refused to have Julia GIllard over there for the campaign which like it or not speaks volumes about how the ALP rate their own chances in September.

Massive swing for the Liberals, they stand to finish tonight with 40 seats to Labors 19. Swing also coming against the Greens at nearly 4%.

I would expect on Monday morning for Julia Gillard to blame the whole thing on the State ALP in WA and take no ownership at all of the fact that the ALP have been smashed in Qld, NSW and now WA by a crushing margin each time. Unless the back benchers of the ALP whose margins are under what is being lost in WA in the swing against them there take action GIllard is in for the long haul to September.

still, as much as i hate labor, im sure in ten years time when the libs run everything, it will be a swing against the libs like this so, the merry go round still goes on

Well on the basis of last night, Stephen Smith will be gone (Perth - Ric Charlesworth's old seat IIRC a seat Labor has held since 1983) that will put the coaclition on 75 seats only needing to win one other seat nationally to form government. Brand will be in danger of falling too - Beazleys old seat.

So there are some implications federally.

Face it the only real interest in September now is will the Coalition win control of the Senate too, as the lower house is a fore-gone conclusion.

Antony Green the ABC's election analyst says he expects Labor to retain their three WA seats in the federal election.
