Just read the article, seems to be recognising an algal bloom due to hot weather as the cause. Spose it is better to not use all the facts when spinning a story though.

The increase in salinity in the gulf caused by the running of the desal plant for an entire year is less than the increase in salinity as a result of the evaporation in the gulf that occurs on a single 40 degree day.

Could the temperature that the returned water is hitting the gulf be an issue if its differnet from the temperature of the water at the release point?

Anyone remember the two weeks of hot humid weather we had not long back? Unusually humid for down here and an alage bloom has formed. Fish died off over here on the west coast as well, with no desal plants over here.
