Abbott's mandatory internet filter

THE coalition plans to filter the internet.

In a policy hidden on page 7 of a document entitled "The Coalition's Policy to Enhance Online Safety for Children", the Coalition has said it will adopt the UK-style policy of internet filtering.

That means households would automatically have adult content filters applied on their internet and phone services, but would have to opt out if they want the unfiltered version of the net.

Apparently it was poorly worded, according to Tones and Mal on twitter. There is no Internet filter.

@YouDecide9: ABBOTT: We don't support internet filtering ... There was a badly worded sentence or two in the policy document that went out. #YouDecide9

@YouDecide9: Abbott says despite Paul Fletcher's confirmation of opt out policy today, Coalition will never support internet filtering #YouDecide9]

Were the Libs telling the truth then?

THE Coalition will adopt an internet filter for mobile phones and ISPs similar to that being implemented in the UK which will stop the transmission of objectionable material unless a user opts out.

However a user will have to be 18 years or over to get the block removed - which means the block will be compulsory on devices and computers owned by children and teenagers.

Or now?

The Coalition’s internet filtering policy was in disarray on Thursday night as opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull slapped down backbench Liberal MP Paul Fletcher over his plan to impose an online filter across Australia.

“The policy which was issued today was poorly worded and incorrectly indicated that the Coalition supported an “opt out” system of internet filtering for both mobile and fixed line services,” Mr Turnbull said in a hurriedly issued statement. “That is not our policy and never has been.”

Earlier on Thursday, on the second last day of the election campaign, the plan’s architect, Mr Fletcher, issued an internet filter policy that would have forced major service providers such as Telstra to adopt a restrictive access system and lock out adult material unless users specifically opted out.

The proposal was immediately attacked by internet service providers including Perth-based company iiNet, which warned it would battle a Coalition government through the courts if ordered to adopt the internet filter.

Turnbull caught out defending the policy earlier on Triple J:

The plans were slammed on social media, but Opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull appeared to defend the policy during an interview on triple j's Hack program.

"It's essentially installing that software either in the smart phone or in the modem as a default which you can switch off," he said.

However, Mr Turnbull later tweeted that he had only read the policy a short time before the interview, and was merely doing his best to "make sense of it".

He released a statement a short time afterwards saying the policy document was "poorly worded".

Oops, we accidentally said there would be an internet filter. And by accidentally we mean we accidentally announced it, we meant to keep that hidden until after the election.
