Most of eastern Europe adore Ronnie.

He won the cold war and freed them from their socialist utopia

That's true. Real benefits for them.

The negative was that the US economy has struggled ever since, while the Russians recovered on profits from Gazprom, and we may have had clean energy for decades had the plan come off.

On the other hand, former Astronaut, Jerry Pournelle, may have been proven right in his later SciFi novels in which the "Co-Dominium" between the US and Russia dominated the solar system and later the galaxy...

Old mate Don, is claiming his administration has done the most for African Americans since Lincoln!

Remember Trumpy, it’s not a lie, if you believe it.

Before Corona and these riots it was a 60/40 he would be returned and problem win on those numbers.
Now very much a 50/50.

The problem is with voluntary voting and elections on a week day - only the extremists bother to vote and the biggest extremist minority wins for their edge of the spectrum. The only hope is that the moderates in the middle ground get sick of this recurring situation and make the effort next time.

Our system of compulsory presentation on a weekend gets the moderates there, and then most of them think and vote once they have made the effort to present rather than throw their vote away at that point.

As for good US Presidents - Obama had some appeal but my favourite was Jimmy Carter, who was teaming the US up with the Russians to try to get solar energy collector systems up into orbit and transmit the power to Earth (and ultimately the moon) by laser beam to collector stations in the deserts. A Bostonian colleague of mine who visited Oz as a lecturer back then was already training groups of Russian and US techs to get along for the 2 year placements planned.

Then came Ronnie Reagan and "Star Wars" instead...
Yeah the US electoral system leans it's way to the greater bunch extremists.

As much as people bitch and moan about having to vote here in Austalia, as you said it's gets the moderates out and you really need that at the moment.

Just imagine non compulsory voting here in Australia, without the moderates to add balance you would see more power to extreme minorities like the Greens, One nation and Lib Dems.

I haven't researched this but it seems that every Australian election 2PP is won at the most: 53%-47% either way

It is interesting to see this Failed State's curfews being primarily used as an excuse to dole out State sanctioned violence.

Had dinner with some ex-Hong Kong friends on Saturday night. I have been a stoic supporter of Hong Kong's resilience in being able to bounce back from adversity over the past 30 years I've been going there, but none of us can see how they are going to survive these new security laws.

Well well I see the US electioneering is picking up steam.

Something like nearly 3 months of ( Peaceful Protests ) in Portland and chaos through out other cities.

So who will sort out the chaos and anarchy ?????

If Orange Man Trump wins the violence continues.

If Sleepy Joe wins the violence continues.

So its a win win for both parties.

The losers the Americans.

Just watching some snippets of the Republican convention. Yeah I'm not sure either but I did.

Anyway there's a big speech, lots of build, the crowd (fake crowd of course) starts to rise as they get to the end of there speech and they are building, building, she the music and end with SOMETHING EXCITING AND RANTING MR PRESIDNET TAKE US ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

Or it's some crazy women screaming.

Some odd stuff really, but fascinating all the same, absolutely fascinating.

Americans seem to love this stuff, they really are a bit crazy

If you like craziness keep watching how this all unfolds in the next two months.

Both sides have not got a clue how to curb this violence whilst America burns.

For my two bobs worth tho Trump is a nutter how ever I still prefer capitalism.

The Democrats are no longer the true Democrats of yesteryear they have been hijacked by the radical left Marxists.

Interesting times ahead for USA

This is probably the most insane thing you've said on this forum - and that is seriously saying something.

The Democratic Party is not remotely left wing. Comparing it to Australian political parties, its economic and social policies are most similar to that of the Liberal Party. The Democrats are far more right wing than the Australian Labor Party, whom no serious commentator would accuse of being radical or Marxist.

The reason AOC and Bernie Sanders (technically an independent, albeit one who ran for the Democrat nomination) receive so much attention is because they are a long way from the vast majority of the party.

If the Democrats in America appear even remotely left wing, it's because of the way the Republicans have degenerated in the last 50 years from being a traditional conservative party to being a lunatic asylum for paranoid reactionaries to whom truth and reality are of no concern.

Of course the Democrats will appear left wing when up against the Republican Party. But there are fewer greater proponents of capitalism than the Democratic caucas and nothing Biden is proposing is even remotely radical by any terrestrial standards.
