Who cares what her Maj would like...

In my teens I cringed when then PM Bob Menzies recited the poem to her during a visit here that went "I did but see her passing by yet will I love her till I die."

Then when we went to decimal coinage he wanted to call our new replacement for the old Pound the "Royal"..
That moved me to poetry - mine went " They want to call it the "Royal" - a noisome reminder of a long dead monarchy far across the sea..."
I wasn't the only one outraged by that simperingdevotion to the UK - thats how it became the Dollar.

Yet, I must be grateful to him for a good idea - as did many of my peers I got my university education by winning a Commonwealth Scholarship Menzies had introduced, which paid the unversity fees that existed in those days long before HECS existed. It also paid a small "living allowance" based on family income.
