Nicole Cornes - do celebrity candidates devalue politics?

Nicole Cornes will run for Boothby as a Labor candidate in the next Federal election. She was rung on last Friday and 2 days later she was in Sydney for the National Labor Conference.

Other "celebs" have included Peter Garrett, Maxine McKew and Nigel Smart and Tony Pilkington has also been courted lately.

Do you think they are a viable election tactic or merely a cheap option that means parties dont need to spend money promoting their candidate given they already have a profile even if they dont have politics 101 under their belts?

Anyone can be a politician. They just have to be prepared for the scrutiny and the duds will be found out.

Thankfully Alan Jones never won pre-selection.

I'm not sold on Nicole Cornes. All I know about her is her page in the Sunday Mail. What sort of experience does she have that would be relevant?

I don't think think just thinking of people as celebrities and judging them on that alone is the right way to make a final judgment on their ability to be a politician. It's a case by case thing.

Maxine McKew is a good choice, even I might consider voting for her. Garrett is a hypocrite and Nicole Cornes doesn't seem to have much grasp of what is involved in politics, she also really has no affinity or background with the party she hopes to represent.

You have to judge against the people who have been elected previously. Scores of union officials, lawyers, duds and party hacks.

Give people a go until they've proved themselves one way or the other.

so you would give David Hicks a go before he proved himself one way or the other, maybe we can import paris hilton and get the under 25 female vote?

That hardly follows. He's already proved he's an idiot, so of course I wouldn't. He's also unelectable.

do you seriously think Nicole Cornes is electable?

I doubt whether any ALP candidate is electable in Boothby, so Nicole Cornes is as good as anyone else.

If she wins, the Government would be annihilated.

That is indesputable......Christ if we lose Boothby......it would be akin to a '96 result and ATM that is possible....

However i can't see Nicole Cornes getting up, if Mia lived in Boothby though...

The biggest contradiction of all uttered by Nicole Cornes was that she wants to make working life a balance with family life, especially for mothers. No problems there. Her next stated ambition was to work at the DPP. If she thinks she can have that sort of life at the DPP she is more naive than ever. Trust me, I know from very personal experience that there is NO WAY you can balance working at the DPP with having a life as well. NO WAY WHATSOEVER. A big reality check is required there Nicole.

I disagree, alot of industry is in Boothby area and I know of alot of "blue collar" workers who voted liberal last elections but will not be doing same mistake this time.

..Unless they are worried about their mortgages still and look closely at Labor's form in the federal arena. I was actually feeling pretty good about Rudd and a new balanced direction for the Labor party, but then they forgot to gag Julia Gillard, and Greg Combet set out to put a popular local member and supporting mother out of work instead of trying to help Labor win a marginal seat ....ooops - same old firm!

Oh please, I can hardly stop the tears. A popular local member and supporting mother, dear, oh, dear. She inherited the seat from her father and has been a total dud. She doesn't have a god-given right to the seat.

The ALP have been criticised regularly for selecting party hacks and now that they select better credentialled candidates, you start talking about "popular local members" and supporting mothers about to be thrown to the wolves .

Interesting that she mentioned the other day that it was disappointing that female politicians were still being judged on the way they look............................

..............................now hang on a minute, wasn't this the same person that took a shot at the appearance of Julia Gillard some months back?

Combet is a party hack!! It's a bit like the Greek leftie the party put up for Semaphore in the 1980s and the popular local ALP guy who then stood as an independent and won. Local people were saying the local guy was a "proper Labor man , not like that bloody Commo!"

Sorry to quote myself, but that and TM's reply sums it up.

Mia Handshin, although getting a bigger swing, couldn't win Sturt and she didn't have to put up with a massive negative media campaign against her.

Boothby won by Liberals = normal transmission.

Play on.

If every Labor candidate got the scrutiny / attention from the media that Nicole got well the overall result may have been different

I don't know if anybody here listens to ABC radio much in the morning but if those guys were brutally honest about it they would admit they were targetting her. An interview a few weeks back which was then edited differently to become the 9AM headline story was enough evidence for me. You wouldn't have picked it up unless you heard her interview in full before they concocted their later story.
