New RAH?

Postby Squawk » Sat May 26, 2007 11:29 pm

If, as it has been suggested, the State Govt announces a new RAH will be built on the existing railyards site, what do you think should happen to the RAH site?

A few things I thought of were to:

a temporary accommodation facility for migrants
A city market a bit like Salamanca Markets in Hobart or Victoria markets in Melbourne - better there than in Rundle St
Reestablish the Investigator Science Centre there in the museum/culture/education precinct of the city
Establish something called "Adelaide Square' - a plaza where crowds could spend lunch times with big screen entertainment that could also be used for watching major sporting events like World Cup soccer games, Grand Finals for footy, Big Cricket games etc.
move the two bus stations on Currie St to the current RAH site on North Tce and build an extension to the overflowing Adelaide Remand Centre in Currie St, a second Police Watchouse and an emergency accommodation facility for the homeless all in Currie St

What are your ideas?

There would be a few Heritage listed buildings in that site so it would be interesting what could be done there. UniSA might look into retro fitting some of the buildings as they are currently very cramped for space. There is only one bus depot in Currie St these days as the other one has been sold off but its on the wrong side of the road for the remand centre extension.

Like most developments in the city there would be apartments involved. Take the Tivoli hotel for example, the entire second level is going to to be apartments plus six levels of apartments behind with and two carparking including Adelaide's first commercial vehicle lift.

Could be a good site to set aside some land for Port Adelaide to have a licensed city club there for when they play home games at Adelaide Oval?

I knew the RAH and QEH fairly well but avoided marrying a nurse. My first wife was a teacher - my second wife came along quite some years after the first and I had agreed to a reasonably amicable divorce.

[I had some years as a young professional around town with a Porsche so I wasn't in a hurry.]

Surely a hospital would be better of being built just out of town, perhaps merging it with The women's and children's hospital.
On old rail yards build a new super stadium like Colonial Stadium.

Back when I was in Adelaide the administration at the WCH seemed to be trying to get rid of all male employees - could be a problem if that hasn't changed. Teaching hospitals need to be close to Universities too.

Another Stadium - with AAMI and Adelaide Oval seemingly underused??

don't know about the hospital situation psyber but there will never be a new joint stadium for football or cricket in Adelaide as the SANFL and SACA would never agree to anything. I reckon this new RAH is a goer and it will happen somewhere.

The Clipsal site adjacent to the Parklands on Park Terrace is soon to be vacated, is that site large enough to host the new hospital? It is also adjacent to the railway lines and a railway station.

The bus station next to the remand centre is just like the buses, owned by the government, but used by private companys that run the buses. Mostly it's used by Torrens Transit, Southlink use it as a lay over yard between am & pm peak hours.

That's being sold for housing. It's going to make Norths major sponser richer.....much richer.
