The Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association has boasted top local footy talent for decades.
With the help of league insiders, we’ve ranked our top 25 players of the 21st Century with season 2025 just around the corner.
Footballing ability, achievements, awards and impact were taken into account when selecting the players.
Here is our list from 25 to 1.
25. DEAN TERLICH
(Tanunda)
While Terlich only spent a couple of seasons with the Magpies in the BLGFA, he undoubtedly ranks among the best players the competition has seen this century.
A versatile utility who could dominate up front, impact the game in the contest and also do a job at the back when required, the former Melbourne and Norwood gun possessed brilliant overhead skills and could find a teammate anywhere around the ground.
24. DARREN LESKE
(Freeling)
A seven-time best and fairest at Freeling, Leske remains one of the top BLGFA players since 2000.
Leske was a hardworking and efficient midfielder at his best for the Redlegs who won plenty of his own footy and distributed at a top level by hand and foot.
Made multiple teams of the year on top of his numerous best and fairests with his club.
23. PATRICK WHITE
(South Gawler)
A key back who also possesses the ability to impact the game up front if needed.
White can do a job on any BLG forward and has become known for his spoiling and marking ability in the air as well as his tackling pressure and distribution.
Has represented SA Country, made multiple teams of the year and won a premiership with the Lions.
22. TODD MILES
(Barossa District)
An athletic big man who won multiple premierships with Barossa District.
Possessing impressive marking ability and an accurate leg, Miles was one of the most versatile players in the BLGFA with the Bulldogs who had the ability to play in the ruck, up forward or behind the footy if needed.
Playing-coached the Bulldogs to multiple flags, was best on ground in a grand final and also captained SA Country.
21. JAMES BENTLEY
(Nuriootpa)
A member of multiple teams of the year through the 2010s and early 2020s, Bentley has been one of the competition’s top forwards.
A star for Nuriootpa, the gun frontman could take big marks, boot goals from anywhere and also set up his teammates with distribution.
Was the league leading goalkicker in 2021 and is also a premiership player with Nuriootpa.
20. MATT DOECKE
(Angaston)
A star stalwart for Angaston in the BLG, Doecke played 441 A Grade games for the Panthers.
Was a dangerous wing/onballer who boasted clean hand and foot skills and could damage opposition with his run and delivery.
Made a number of teams of the year, won multiple best and fairests with the club and was a premiership captain.
19. MALCOLM GREENWOOD
(Tanunda)
A talented midfielder for the Magpies, Greenwood produced his best footy in the 2000s.
A tireless player who covered ground as well as anyone, Greenwood could dominate as an in and under player or do damage with his carry and ball use.
Was a premiership player with the Magpies and won the Mail Medal in 2006.
18. CRAIG HARVEY
(Angaston)
A hard midfielder through the 2000s for the Panthers, Harvey produced some top drawer footy at his peak in the BLGFA.
Harvey could dominate a game with his ability to win the contested footy, deal to teammates efficiently and also hit the scoreboard.
Won a flag with Angaston, won the Mail Medal in 2010 and was in multiple teams of the year.
17. BRAD TAYLOR
(Kapunda)
Taylor could do damage through the middle and occasionally up front for Kapunda.
A skilled player at ground level and overhead, Taylor won a number of contested possessions each week and had the ability to boot bags of goals or find teammates with accurate disposal.
Won the Mail Medal in 2013, made a number of teams of the year and was also a five-time club best and fairest.
16. NICK SCHMIDT
(Tanunda)
A multiple time SA Country representative and the older brother of West Adelaide premiership captain Chris Schmidt, Nick has forged a legacy of his own in the BLGFA.
Schmidt often did his best work as a dangerous half back who picked off attacks and damaged opposition with his disposal and high footy IQ.
Won the Mail Medal in 2016 and has been in a number of teams of the year.
15. BRAD MERCER
(Gawler Central)
A star premiership player with Gawler Central, Mercer has been one of the top BLG forwards this century.
A four-time league leading goalkicker, Mercer often dominated defenders with his smart leading, athletic marking, forward pressure and goalkicking ability from close range or distance.
14. ADAM COCKSHELL
(Freeling)
The standout ruck of the competition throughout the better part of the last decade, Cockshell ranks firmly among the 21st Century’s best.
A hitout force who wins plenty of the contested footy, delivers accurately to teammates and takes a number of important grabs around the ground.
Has been named in numerous teams of the year.
13. FRASER EVANS
(Kapunda)
The former Sturt star and premiership player was one of the top BLGFA players throughout his time with Kapunda.
A versatile gun who could play wing, half back or through the middle, Evans impacted the game in a number of ways and was one of the competition’s most skilled stars.
Was named in a number of teams of the year during his few seasons with the Bombers.
12. BRAD TAYLOR
(Gawler Central)
A consistent mid/forward utility through his time with Gawler Centrals, Taylor has been one of the top BLGFA players this century.
One of the most dangerous players in the competition during his peak, Taylor’s ability to do damage on the ball with distribution and clean skills while also impacting the game up front as a dominant forward made him hard to stop.
A premiership player, Taylor won the 2008 Mail Medal, made multiple teams of the year and was also a leading league goalkicker.
11. TYSON IRLAM
(Willaston)
A member of multiple teams of the year and a premiership captain for the Donnybrooks last season.
Irlam has been one of SA country footy’s top midfielders in recent years and ranks among Willaston’s best players of this century with his ability to take hold of a game in the contest through his hard as nails approach and top drawer skills.
Is also a multiple time best and fairest winner for Willaston and has represented SA Country.
10. NICK GREGURKE
(Nuriootpa)
A superstar midfielder who has helped Nuriootpa to a number of successes during the past few BLGFA seasons.
Gregurke racks up high disposal numbers each week of the season, winning the contested ball in the middle and bursting from stoppage to find teammates and boot goals.
Won the 2024 Mail Medal, played in the 2022 premiership with the Tigers and has also been in multiple teams of the year.
9. LUKE WELLS
(Tanunda)
Like ‘Billy’ Wells was a dominant player for Tanunda through his time with the club and led the Magpies to some major successes.
A star ruck for the club, Wells could take over a game with his tap work and distribution and also possessed strong marking ability around the ground.
Won the Mail Medal in a strong 2012 season, has been an SA Country rep and also helped the Magpies to premierships in 2010 and 2011.
8. STEVE SUMMERTON
(Angaston)
A brilliant onballer and leader for the Panthers, Summerton has been the driving force behind the Panthers’ surge back up to premiership contention.
The former Port Adelaide SANFL captain has been one of the competition’s top midfielders for a number of years, often taking over games with his ability to win the ball and find teammates with precision.
Has been named in the team of the year almost every season since joining the competition in 2019.
7. ROGER JAMES
(Barossa District)
A star of SA footy, former Port Adelaide, Norwood and Kersbrook gun Roger James was also a force for Barossa District.
One of the competition’s most feared forwards, James booted 143 goals in 79 games for the Bulldogs.
He also won back-to-bac flags with the club in 2012 and 2013 as playing-coach.
6. STEVE BURTON
(South Gawler)
One of the competition’s top players in recent years, Burton has solidified himself as one of the top players of the 21st Century.
The South Gawler star is a big bodied midfielder who has no issue doing the dirty work for his side and is also a reliable distributor and goalkicker.
Has won two Mail Medals in 2022 and 2023 as well as a premiership in 2023.
5. JASON MCKENZIE
(Kapunda)
A star ruck for Kapunda, McKenzie put together a consistent and dominant career for the Bombers in the BLG.
McKenzie was an imposing ruck who could release midfielders with elite tap work, move around the ground as well as any big man, take big marks and kick big goals.
Was integral in the club’s 2004 and 2005 premierships, won two Mail Medals in 2001 and 2012, made multiple teams of the year and also represented SA Country.
4. SAM COLQUHOUN
(Tanunda)
The former Port Adelaide and Sturt gun has been one of the competition’s greats during his time as playing-coach of Tanunda.
A highly skilled midfielder who has been among the BLGFA’s top distributors over a number of years, Colquhoun has led the Magpies through a consistent period since joining in 2021.
Won the Mail Medal in 2022, is a multiple team of the year member and has also represented SA Country.
3. SHAUN BAKER
(Willaston)
A dual Mail Medallist and multiple team of the year member during his time at Willaston, Baker was a standout in the midfield for the Donnybrooks throughout a number of years.
Baker was a damaging and courageous midfielder for his club during his 20-year playing career, winning a Barossa Light and Gawler FA premiership in 1999 before going on a dominant stretch through the 2000s.
He won Mail Medals in 2007 and 2009, the latter of which he was far and away the best player in the competition.
2. MICHAEL MCCARTHY
(Kapunda)
A Mail Medallist in 2004 and member of a number of BLG teams of the year, McCarthy has gone down as one of the competition’s top players since 2000.
A dominant player around the ground who won a lot of his own footy and dealt to teammates with precision, McCarthy played a huge role in Kapunda’s 2004 and 2005 premierships.
He was especially dangerous in 2004 with over 40 disposals in the big dance.
1. CHARLIE MOLYNEUX
(Gawler Central)
A legend of the Gawler Central Football Club, Molyneux captained the Tigers to some of their most successful seasons.
Molyneux was a tough midfielder who led his team by voice and example, winning plenty of the contested footy before bursting from contests to find teammates, create goalkicking opportunities or slot one home himself.
He won two Mail Medals in 2017 and 2020, two premierships in 2014 and 2020 and was named in numerous teams of the year.
