Reports have it that SJ has signed APFL leading goal kicker Barry Burgess.
Must have cost a packet to get him there, maybe as a Reserves coach to slip him into the 2010 budget.

I think discussions have taken place 'The Duke' but not sure if all is confirmed, believe Maccy have visited their local bank to get a loan to cover his match payments. Quality pick up if true, if he gets his hands on the ball mark it down as a sausage roll, doesn't miss many.

Signed, sealed delivered I am lead to believe underthepack.
I will speak to his brother at cricket tomorrow to confirm!

Laughable about how Maccy is supposedly paying enormous coin. We're not giving a pittance compared to at least 4 other clubs.

Why is it laughable ?? Gums tried to get SJ to coach us a couple years back but couldnt afford his demands, times have changed a bit with more sponsorship but we are by no means a wealthy club, we werent all that far away from folding due to on AND off field issues.

Yes we pay some of our players, some a reasonable amount but I wouldnt imagine theres a great difference between our clubs. I would say the top 6, Kersy aside, would be the most generous in terms of player payments, and I wouldnt mind betting that ladder order would be close to representing that. Certainly GE's boys are way above everyone else, but the next lot would all be pretty similar.

i think in this day and age of G.E Hughes construction Football Club pushing the need to spend money to stay competitive we should stop bagging every one else for spending money. it's sad that the days of a team full of local players winning GFs is gone but to keep your club alive you need to spend money. spending money shouldn't be frowned upon. if u have the money y not spend it because there is no way you can win with out it. just look at callington. the only team not to spend any money last year and look where they ended up...
i guesse what im trying to say is lets stop focusing on all the money being thrown around and just accept it.

In the end clubs have had to spend money to try even out the playing feild. places like blackwood and mt barker have far better access to players in towns of 15000 then teams like ironbank or uraidla. so smaller towns have spent up to catch up then everyone has caught on. teams should be allowed to spend money it makes for better quality football. teams that make money during the year of hard work should be able to recruit players to help win games and this might inturn bring back the local bandwagon supporters and hopefully poor more money back into the club.

Theres a fine line between keeping local footy 'local' or getting imports in to bolster your club to help fight. Whilst Kersy dont pay that many players they do have their fair share of imports too, everyone has to should they want to compete. The trend will continue and there isnt anything we can do about it. Quite frankly if it lifts the standard of footy im watching I dont mind too much. Obviously theres a line, but currently only one club crosses that

Have a look at the threads from all the other leagues, the also rans bag the top clubs for buying imports. Regional footy wont survive with out them and to be successful or at least competitive clubs have no choice. The difference between TV and the rest is they have a sponsor with bottomless pockets ( who happens to be the coach). Clubs from the smaller towns like Gum wouldnt be able to fill two senior sides with locals even if the competition was bad enough for an all local team to be competitive. The situation isnt helped when your neighbours are trying to poach the players you have developed.

Hmmm, interesting comment re Callington. I must mention that up until this season past, Callington were paying literally thousands each week to the likes of Troy Bond and finished exactly where they did this year. LAST. The only difference is that the margins changed from 40+ goals to 80+. Like most, I reluctantly accept that money is part of country footy these days. I all depends in which direction you throw it.
Older, wiser and been there. But still love that grassroots country footy.

Excellent comment Crumber. I am also aware of the huge sums dished out by Callington prior to this season to a collection of has-beens who weren't worth a rats. People have short memories and no-one should feel sorry for Callington just because they didn't pay anyone in 2009 and finished bottom. Until this season, they were just as bad or worse than other clubs in terms of the $ they paid out. You are also correct in pinpointing that they flung their money in the wrong direction. While Bond was standing in the goalsquare doing nothing, not a cent was spent in cultivating promising juniors. No wonder the kids have gone elsewhere.

Birdwood are on the tail of 2 ex north players, will be good in this comp tho... the only T.v players not continuing from last year that i know of is Josh Hill think the travel got 2 much it was after all a 6000 km round trip. If they signed james and dempsey that is laughable u have a 6'3" mouse and a 6'2" steroid muncher both who dont like to get the football. Also heard that Todd Bajic a friend of deake smith is at the club next year.
