Torrens Valley probably wouldn’t be as worried about facing the reigning premiers in Nairne this week as they would’ve been at the start of the season. Rams aren’t travelling all that well!

They have no players left since the coins dried up to be worried!

It's hard for a club to convince players to stay around when the club doesn't find a replacement for the coach until November. Torrens Valley changed committees after last season and the new committee went against what the majority of players wanted to do.
As a result they are left with 1 A grader from last season.

But was the majority of players being those who were recruited to the club and being paid good money - probably more than what many would have been paid elsewhere. I'm all for clubs, particularly country clubs, maintaining their identity and existence but when a club's local population and demographic means the clear majority of their players have no association with the local area, past and present, then what is being achieved by that. There are numerous country clubs with hybrid names (due to mergers) on Yorke Peninsula, Eyre Peninsula and the Mid North that have been that way for over 20 years, not to mention several in metropolitan Adelaide such as Goodwood Saints, Brighton Bombers, Portland, Payneham Norwood Union etc. What has changed in the last 20 years that has seen little or no mergers. Country Football Victoria did a massive review not long ago with recommendations that have been implemented that has seen clubs merge, leagues consolidated, clubs switch leagues etc. I think its time for Community Footy SA to do something similar and possibly save some clubs and leagues from themselves.

The players wanted a merger last year and the new committee chose to not push for a merger.
The players that were 'recruited' the vast majority of them had played for the club for 3-6 years, they had 2 players playing their first season last year.
I just find it disrespectful to say the only reason that the club lost so many players was $.

Not sure I said it was the only reason, it’s a reason though. B grade blokes used to get a pineapple just for training. Turn it up.

With a lack of junior footballers and have Lobey, Birdwood and Gumeracha close, it was looking very unlikely that the club would be able to survive in future years.

The reality of a merger between Northern clubs (Gum, Birdwood, Kersbrook, TV, to a lesser extent Lobey) is very close... There have been conversations but egos tend to get in the way... it should probably happen soon though.

Not sure the committee deciding not to merge can explain why so many players walked.

So the players had the club’s future at heart and were concerned for it, and yet they exit on mass, leaving it completely in the lurch.

Also, is early November all that late to appoint a coach in amateur footy? (genuine question) Always found it quite fickle players coming and going from clubs based on who is coaching.

Agree saintal, sounds like a cop-out.

Guessing November would seem latish for those in the handful of higher leagues, which perhaps TV was still aspiring not, but not necessarily for Div 2.

How many of the players who left were locals or had connections to locals?

How come Birdwood can always maintain good juniors? Perhaps, like saintal says, thoe with genuine concern for the club could have got in there and tried to improve the junior set-up.

While I don't necessaril want to see TV win, I do think their presence is important for a solid Div 2 comp.

Recognise a few locals in the clearances (ie Cooper, Cotton, Waterman, Press, Burgoyne, Prior). Probably a few others too. So it wasn't exclusively the imports.

No doubt there were a number of factors at play (drying up of $$, the drop to a lower div, a few key players leaving which causes a snowball effect)

Having played some juniors for the club and knowing a few guys playing there now I hope they can keep their head above water.

So a club that had already merged, lost players as the committee of the day did not want to further merge?

BTW I played many years ago for one of those merged clubs and I have no beef with them. Surely there’s more to it than that. Just saying.

Pretty poor performance by us. Full credit to birdwood though they played some really good footy and just appear to be playing really committed team footy. They have lots of good locals and have recruited a couple of handy players to complement them, they will certainly be around the mark this year.

We will have to respond this week against a kangarilla side full of confidence after winning 3 on the trot. Terrific to see Div 2 having 8 teams that could possibly make the finals, been a long time since that has happened.
