Mallala Football Club celebrated its 100 year birthday this season with the launch of a fantastic publication which summarizes each and every year of the 100 years of the footy club since 1909. Written by the Thorne family, it is a fantastic read. I realize not too many posters on this forum would be interested but I think it is a great way capture the history of a club and particularly to educate the younger people of the club about the pride and success of the over such a long period of time. The book launch and subsequent read of this publication was very inspiring as a current player and I am sure it inspired many of our clubs volunteers, members and players to keep up the great work and to maintain Mallala FC as one of this states great country footy clubs.

Thanks Catattack, not easy out there with the wind and heat but apart from that it was a fairly straight forward game to umpire.

Take my hat off to the A grade umpires (Gus & Bert) handled a difficult situation very well.

One downside of writing a history book is that it will very quickly become outdated and so it has come to pass that with the end of the 2009 football season “Encyclopedia of South Australian Country Football Clubs” is now two seasons out of date.

“Encyclopedia of South Australian Country Football Clubs” while still containing several thousand grand final scores dating back to the late 1800's and up to date histories for over 900 clubs it does not have the scores from the 2008 and 2009 grand finals.

As a result of this I have contacted all of the following bookstores to discount the “Encyclopedia of South Australian Country Football Clubs” by $10.00 which in most instances will drop the price to $35.00.

Dymocks - Rundle Mall
Gawler Books - Main North Rd. Willaston
Murray Bridge Newsagency & Toyworld
The Whistling Fish Bookshop - Grey Masts Robe
Karoonda Mini Mart
Matilda's Bookshop, Stirling
Kingscote Newsagency
Manfield McLaren Vale Newsagency
Clare Newsagency
Browzers Bookshop - Broken Hill
Roxby Downs Newsagency
www.sportswriter.com.au

Manfield Newsagency in McLaren Vale will be stocking “Encyclopedia of South Australian Country Football Clubs” for two more weeks only. So those of you that live in the Southern Vales and Fleurieu Peninsula and have been meaning to purchase a copy, you had better hop to it.

Anyone ordering the book by mail order will also only pay $35.00. Those of you who knock on my front door to purchase a copy will only pay $25.00. If there are any further queries, please PM me.

Re: Country footy history book - every club in SA!

Postby 200 Killer Wasps » Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:02 pm

Due to unforeseen circumstances I have found myself with a lot of free time of late so I am back researching country football archives for material to be used in a follow up book.

My next book will again be based around country football but this time I intend placing more of a focus on individual achievements through history more so than club success. I would like to invite SA Footy.com posters to make relevant contributions to my new book.

With my last book I set out to find every country football club that had ever been formed and I believe I had a 95% success rate in aiming for that target. This time I want to name every country bred footballer who has gone onto to play league football at SANFL and AFL level. Indeed a big call but I have already made a fair start and to achieve my goal I am now calling on the public to send to me details of fathers, uncles, grandfathers etc. who have played at the highest levels.

I am also asking for assistance from country football followers in creating top 100 lists for the following categories-:

Most games played in a career of country football - Kicking over 100 goals in a season - Most goals kicked in a grand final - Most goals kicked in a match – Most games for an umpire - Long serving presidents, secretaries, coaches and captains - Most club best and fairest awards - Highest score kicked by a country football team - Teams with records for consecutive wins and losses - Country footballers who excelled in other fields e.g. Rick Darling (Waikerie/Cricket), Rob Kerin (Crystal Brook/Politics) and Hayden Stoeckel (Berri/Swimming).

If anyone has any interesting or humorous anecdotes with regard to country football I would be most interested in considering them for inclusion in the book as well. I can be contacted by email bplines@bigpond.com. or just pm me
