Bragging right canvases across the state

Postby DoublebluTiger » Tue Jun 09, 2009 9:43 pm

G'day everyone.. apologies if thread been done before, but I got talking with a friend on weekend about different public, private builidings or objects that were/are used a canvas for a local footy (even netball too) to paint in their colours after winning flag..I'm not talking about premier team sneaking up to rival town to paint indescriminant tags etc after they win but rather well known and clearly viewed objects used a bragging right canvas. here is a three:

-there was a tank on the hillside along side the Gladstone - Pirie Rd I think that use to get painted a fair bit...
-of course the large tanks near the Lincoln / Eyre Highway junction with about 20 different clubs putting their names to the premierships
-it's almost faded to nothing now (like Yankalilla premiership glory really LOL ) but there was a tigers head on one of the Myponga reservoir bridge pump houses after their '85 glory.

just wondered where else in state there were such 'canvases' for teams to brag about premiership glory. Ta
Success is in trying

Two I can think of are the bear shaped rock out on the Palmer/Murray Bridge road or thereabouts, and the BL&G paint the TST chimney in Nuri.

Think there's a few - along with many other things - on some big concrete tanks on the road between Port Augusta and Iron Knob.

Blyth-Snowtown has a bike shed painted up the Cats Colours Blue & White with Back to Back
Premiers 2005-06 at the Blyth-Snowtown-Balaklava T-Junction 2 kms out of Blyth.
Balaklava Painted the Silent Cop (Large illuminated Pole in main street) Green & Gold
in 1985 when they won the A's, B's & Junior Colts.
Victor Harbor in the 90's had a mobile HQ Holden Painted up each year that was Leyton Collins.
Wudinna has a Flag Pole in front of Griffo's Pub that is Black & White when Wudinna won but previously its was Blue, White & Red - Central Eyre they won about 4 in row around 2000.
Peterborough had a train Painted up in 1979 when the Railways were in full swing and 1/2 the
players where Railway workers. It had "Saints Shine in 79" Signwritten on the side.

Still trying to remember a few more!

We also painted the two windmills at the bottom of the Clare hills (or Blyth hills depending which way you come from). Had to get a crane in to paint the taller one. That tradition started back in the early eighties. If we play North or South Clare in the grand final, however wins paints the windmills.

1979 was Peterbough's last premiership in Northern Areas, they did make the GF in 80 but were beaten by Crystal Brook. In 1979 they won three flags A, Senior & Junior Colts but with the ultimate dimise of the railways, so went the football club.

Westies who are based in Penong have a windmill painting day on the Monday after each flag, have done it a lot lately with 6 straight flags.

BSR painted some tanks on the Yacka to Clare roads in the 80's, don't know if they have been updated lately but looked good in there day.

The tank on the Gladstone to Pirie road has had a lot of coats lately.

After Crystal Brook broke their premiership drought last year they painted an old house on highway one which looked impressive and on a sign into the town it was titled, Crystal Brook Brook Premiership Town after two football grades went top and 5 or 6 netball teams won as well.
