Big rigs

Postby OnSong » Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:21 am

In your time playing country footy, who are some of the biggest rigs you have ever played with or against.
This also encompasses players that don't boast the body of Bernie Vince but could still tear up a game.
This is continuing on from a discussion sparked by Sky Pilot, thought it would be a great subject.

Some of the bigger rigs I've seen include:

Scott Collison (Central Whyalla): Collo was the dominant forward in the league for at least three or four seasons. Almost as wide as he is tall, Collo was quick off the mark, had a good set of hands and a brilliant shot for goal. Used to kick bags and was virtually unstoppable.

Todd Smitham (Barmera-Monash): I remember looking at him in the centre square and thinking he would be signalling to the bench three minutes in. Has a reasonable engine but his footy smarts and skills by foot are pretty damn good. Found the ball regularly and is difficult to tackle.

There's got to be more big rigs out there that are stunning everyone with their ability to tear up games, despite their "weighty" appearance.

Michael Timms at Robe in the 1980's and 1990's. Starred in a beer ad a few years ago.

I watched a game between Tantanoola and Port McDonnell about 3 years ago, he was playing Reserves for Port Mac, must have been in his mid 40's by then.

Robert Cichowski - played some footy with WWT, recruited by Imperials in RMFL in the 1990's, regularly kicked 100 goals a season. Was very hard to move off the ball by opposition defenders.

Robert Jackamarra in the Port Lincoln League, 20 or so years ago, was kicking huge bags of goals. Played for Lincoln South I think.

TV and HFL will experience Dale Ellis this year. The bloke is a monster and is amazingly quick on his feet for a bloke that size. Pretty safe to say he loves the gym.

Full back can git feditedd. I had to stand some huge Border Districts forward in last year's interleague game. 10 minutes in, he had two goals.
Had legs like tree trunks. I think his last name was Smith?

Martin Petit. Kicked 100 for Berri around 1990. Body on body, no one could match him.
It would be safe to say he hated training with a passion and loved getting blind on a friday night.

I forget his name but there was a huge unit playing up forward for Kowree Naracoorte in an association match against the Riverland last year. Les Pearson was meant to go to him but he looked as if he was going to sh#t himself and cry at the same time so he ran to the forward pocket instead.

Another lad who is surprisingly good is that ranga nicknamed "Hogget" from a club in the south east. Made the Australian Country team a few years ago. Also in the KNTFL I think.

Chris Prime is an absolute stand out for me (Norwood, Ports, Tumby Bay). Kicks an abolsute ton of goals, very hard to move off the ball, gets double and triple teamed a lot of the time and still manages to mark it because of his sheer size and strength and if he doesn't he is surprisingly good at crumbing his own ball too. Absolute man monster. Glad I played with him not against him.

Not much good while at Ports. Known for hitting a lot of kids and just playing dirty in general, but yes, his time at Tumby has been littered with success, culminating in a Mail Medal.
Would love to see his goal kicking tallies over the past four or five seasons.

Yes it was. He was an absolute legend down in the SE.
I remember being down there once and seeing him on their weekly footy show, a massive unit.
I billeted his brother Cavvy in SAPSASA. Cavvy was a ranga.

Paul Centofanti in his hey day at Loxton North was a bloody big unit. Looked like the Michelin Man in a footy guernsey.
While, in a trial game for Loxton, I remember having a tussle with Tanunda's Ian Trimboli and thinking to myself, "what have I got myself into???" Thanks for that Bangers.

Travis Dubrich! He surely deserves a mention ;)
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.
