“Widely predicted to feature towards the rear of the pack at this year’s tournament, Western benefited from an interchange blunder on Saturday, when Southern committed the cardinal sin of having 19 players on the field deep in the second of two halves.”

“It was a genuine mistake. In the excitement of trying to give everyone a run we made an error early in the second quarter. But, really, there had been only a minute’s play, no-one had scored in that time and it had no bearing on the result. I don’t think the whole thing was in the spirit of the game.” Southern coach David Earl, Southern Times Messenger.

Contradiction? Spoke to a few southern players during the week and they also said it was in the first minute and as soon as the player realised he bolted for the bench.

NO contradiction. It was a two half game, no quarters. So where they say second quarter he means second of two halves -shortened games on Sat'dy.

"Deep in the second half" creates more of a headline.

Agree that was quite funny.

Now I look at what I highlighted I can see the confusion. I was simply trying to figure out when the event took place. "Deep in the second half" I took as meaning late in the second half, like the game had been going for some time i.e "deep into time on."

All good :-bd

It was straight after the half time break. 19 players ran onto the field, the one bloke who wasn't meant to be on realised 1 minute in and started to run off, when the opposition saw and called a head count and the bloke had to go back on to be counted.
The only time i've ever been wrong...was when I thought I was wrong!!!

I don't think there is any doubt that 2013 will bypass Pirie. Plenty of options are open including Murray Bridge, Barossa Valley, Port Lincoln (a long way to go if you are from Mount Gambier) and yesterday I heard Broken Hill might put the proverbial toe in the water. I still say its time we took a leaf out of netball, cricket, tennis, lawn bowls etc and played the bloody country champs in the metropolitan area like those sports do with nil drama.
