Watervale has a drop of about three metres from the edge of the oval to the middle. I find Sevenhill equally as picturesque but much better surface.

I played a trial there in 2005, and it was red dirt with a light covering of grass...played 6 quarters and left with about 60% less skin than I rocked up with

Keep your feet HH3 ;) :D

I'm obviously a fair bit older than you but I remember playing colts their in 1982 and there wasn't a blade of grass on the oval. In fact, there was a mouse plague and the oval had holes all over it and the odd mouse would come out during the game. However, 2 or 3 years later I played there, it was like an oasis in the desert, it was lush green grass.

I wasn't born then so I don't remember it. ;)

Wasn't 1982 a pretty severe drought?

Dunno, I wasn't a cocky so droughts didn't mean a lot to me as a 16yo. The farmers would whinge about the weather no matter what it was doing...nothing's changed. I think grass was rare for the years preceding 82 as well.

Did you get there by horse-drawn cart?

Have to agree with you there.

Skin is over-rated.

I must admit, Hahndorf does generate a great atmosphere on GF day. 6,000 paying customers there last year apparently most of which had a great view looking down on the ground. Surface isn't too bad and lights are okay too! Probably a touch too small though would be my only problem.

Best lights in SA? IMO Blackwood looks like the G when powered up.

I didn't know the G had that big a slope on it!

Port oval, home of the Port Pirie Bulldogs, not very picturesque however was laser levelled a few years back, on some parts you could play lawn bowls on it, 3 turf wickets in the middle, 2 turf practice wickets on the outside with 4 practice hardwickets as well. Huge reno's planned for the clubrooms on the western wing.

Willaston Oval magnificent oval.Best oval in BLG by a mile only problem is lack of toilets and clubrooms on the top of the hill.
Last year when GWS played Power in NAB cup challenge game Kevin Sheedy said it was the best deck he had seen outside of AFL.

I know it's not a footy oval any more but I reckon Lenswood oval would have to be the most picturesque...

I agree that Balak is a very good oval. Good facilities, awesome surface. Melrose though is a ripper. They use recycled water from the town STEDS scheme so it usually is lush. The backdrop of Mount Remarkable which is right there - not off into the distance - is quite breath-taking. Of course in the middle of winter the sun disappears behind the mount sometime in the third quarter of the A grade so the temp goes from bloody cold to f*****g cold in a matter of minutes. The netty courts are right there also and a creek runs along the eastern boundary.
