They can't sell them and both used to be paid papers I think - before Rural Press took them over.

Don't get me wrong, the sports section is great. I just counted 36 pages of either full page ads, classifieds and the real estate section of a 72-page edition.
There's 50 per cent. That's not including the other ads in there, I think it would be close to 60 per cent or so. Which isn't a bad thing at all. Just saying it's got a great ad percentage. Going on appearance only, it's healthy if anything.

If you want to work out how well a country paper is doing, look and see how many pages it is. 16 is the bare minimum, 24 is barely acceptable, 28 is okay and anything better than that is a bonus. Last weeks Barossa Leader is 72 and the Bunyip is 44 plus the real estate lift out. Neither is in the grip of Rural Press. The Recorder and Flinders News in Pirie struggles because it has to run on unsustainable percentages like sometimes as high as 27% editorial and pictures to 73% ads and advertorials. Privately run papers vary from 50/50 to 45/55 and 40/60 so there is always much more news and this is why people buy them, not to read stupid faaarking ads.

Last Tuesdays recorder was 20 pages.

Would estimate about 10 pages worth of ads and pictures
2 pages for the TV guide
2 pages for the classifieds
1 page kids corner filler
1 page for the weather

Plus the fact most if not all the sports articles were written by volunteers.

No wonder no one buys it.

They own their own press, they're independent and look to be sailing comfortably for both ad and editorial content. Would be a lucrative little business I reckon

would be pretty easy to work out their income. Get the col/cm rate and/or 1/4, 1/2, and full page rate and at 36 pages go from there. If they have a two or three stage Goss press it would be cheap to run.

Oh yeah I agree but if you estimated their discounted deals with car yards and real estate agents etc you'd have to be able to get within 10 or 15 per cent don't you reckon?

Terry McAuliffe does a great job of managing rural newspapers.

Going to one a week might be a godsend for the recorder. The naracoorte herald is one a week and seem to be doing well considering the reported current climate for rural newspapers. Have been putting out 40 page papers for the last month around the 30% adverts mark.

Still sneaking a footy article in here and there in the off-season. Stay tuned for a certain announcement about an outspoken former AFL champ being hotly chased for a cameo.

All in all, as PPLions said, it's a good read.

One thinks Aker wouldn't pass up a handy fee to be the centre of attention for a day.

Fevola was playing for Yarrawonga then turned up in the North Tassie league. Lade was playing country vic yet on the Richmond(?) coaching panel. Ken McGregor played country footy while on a SANFL coaching panel.

Keep an eye on the Herald for more.
