SOUTHERN BORDER REVIEW

The SA Community Football League has met this month with the Western Border Football League (WBFL) and clubs to discuss the final recommendations from the Southern Border Review.

As a result of the review, six clubs remain in the WBFL and look forward to a competitive season in what will be a new phase for the League in 2013. These clubs are Casterton, East Gambier, Millicent, North Gambier, South Gambier and West Gambier.

Furthermore, the WBFL will now affiliate solely with the SA Community Football League.

The newly-structured WBFL joins a number of other six-club leagues in South Australia, including the Port Lincoln Football League, Riverland Football League and Whyalla Football League, all of which enjoy healthy and viable competitions.

Both the SACFL and WBFL are confident the WBFL will deliver a high standard of football and be one of the strongest leagues in country SA.

The SACFL will continue to work with the WBFL to explore any opportunities for other clubs in the South East to join the new look WBFL. Initial discussions have been held with Penola Football Club, as per one of the recommendations from the Southern Border Review.

A secondary review specific to the state’s South East will now be undertaken, focusing on football at all levels, including the structures in place for junior footy and umpiring.

A working party comprising seven representatives from the SACFL, Glenelg Football Club, WBFL, Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League, Mid South East Football League and Westen Border Junior Football League is currently being appointed to review and recommend the best structure for football in South East SA for the future.

It is anticipated that these recommendations will be finalised by the middle of 2013.

Is this better or worse Dogwatcher? Who are the winners from this and if there are winners there must be loser. To go from a 10 team comp to 6 sounds like a backward step. What are the other teams doing?
