No better example of this than Round 18 Victor v Creek
Best 3 players for the Creek on the day were Howell, Derham and Kellock with daylight to the others.

Mail Medal Votes were

1 vote - Tarqiun Brown (VH)
2 votes - Damien James (L Ck)
3 votes Thomas Derham (L Ck)

Damien "Roudy" James has been a consistent hard at it, no nonsense contributor for the Hawks over a long period of time but on Saturday had a real downer by his own admission and probably wasnt in the Creeks top 15 best players yet received 2nd Best on ground by the umpires.
Umpires obviously didnt notice or rate one guy for the Creek who had 46 possessions and another who slotted 6 goals whilst playing on the ball or
also the numerous Victor players that played well also.

If this wasn't a blatant mistake in the recording of the votes, then it really is obvious the umpires have no idea.
As ive said before, There are plenty of games where it wouldnt be easy selecting best players but this match was about as easy as it could get.
So if this error / Mistake / cock up / gross mis judgement happened in the very last match that comes to mind, how many other matches throughout the year have there been bogus votes awarded?
At the end of the day, the recipient Nathan Daniel by all reports was a very worthy winner no doubt but so to may have been a few others close up that may have been denied votes due to scenarios as mentioned.

Anyway, onto more important discussion - Finals

Creek v Compass
Score is 1 win each this season.
Creek getting over Compass in Round 1 when it seemed Compass were still basking in the glory of their 1st flag for 36 years.
Come Round 10 when Compass with a near full strength side, UTTERLY DECIMATED the Hawks to the tune of 16 goals.
Since then the Hawks have really put some good footy together to string together 7 wins on the trot whilst Compass have been a bit patchy with their form and were lucky in the end to grab back 3rd spot and the all important double chance.

Tip - If Compass are near full strength then they should be too good for the Creeks who will be fully tested for depth as after having had a relatively good run with injuries throughout the year certainly have some concerns coming into the Finals.

Elim Final Yank v Goolwa / PE
2 teams that have been hard hit by injuries in the latter part of the season by all reports.
Yank will be bitterly disappointed after basically being assured of a top 3 spot all season only to see it snatched from them in the last round.
Whilst Goolwa / PE are counting their lucky stars after ultimately relying the Creeks to knock off Victor to retain their 5th spot ranking after being pummeled by Compass.
Hard one to pick for sure. Guessing it depends on which team has most of their list available as both have shown with close to a full list they would be genuine Flag contenders.

Woweeeee what a first week of finals.

My predictions were correct although the MCFC and LCFC game was a lot closer than i thought.

Week 2 .......... wow. Toss of the coin!! But i ll stick with my percentage theory however could work against me !!!

MCFC to defeat WFC in a belter.

LCFC to defeat Yank.

Again...... could very easily go either way. ImageImage

Creek v Compass game was interesting for the fact it turned out to be surprisingly close after Compass looked to have it in the bag at 3/4 time
Certainly wasn't a game for the highlights reel as was mostly a scrappy, error riddled affair
After an even 1st term where both defenses were on top, Compass flexed their muscle in the 2nd and 3rd terms to build a match winning 31 point lead at 3/4 time.
With the Creeks having no bench left with Mortensen, Domonish and Lally off for the match injured, one would have expected the Dogs to run away with the match but to the Creeks credit they dug deep to amazingly kick the 1st 4 goals of the last term to get within 5 points with 5 minutes to go and Compass appeared to be out on their feet before ultimately scoring a late goal against the run of play to halt the Creeks momentum and scrape home by 11 points.

Yank Thrashed Goolwa / PE by 98 points which was surprising considering their recent form.
Didnt see the game so hard to judge how impressive they were.

1st Semi Final L Creek v Yank
Score is 1 - 1 in the Minor Round
Tough to pick. Again a lot hinges on either side getting close to their best line up on the field.
Creeks have a few injury concerns out of Saturdays game which may / will see a few changes at least.
Ben Warren returning should give the Creeks a better looking set up up forward as this is where for 3/4s against Compass they looked non functional
Brother Nick has served his suspension and maybe available if recovered from injury.
Yank should be full off confidence after their Elim Final win and knowing they outclassed the Creeks easily early in the season when they were up and running.

2nd Semi Final Willunga v Compass.
Score is 2 -= 0 to Willunga in Minor Round. By 1 point when the game was called off in Rd 6 and then 8 - 5 to 4 - 8 in Rd 15
Again hard to tip as both teams coming into finals had patchy form
Wouldnt be surprised if its a hard fought scrappy congested low scoring affair despite playing on the shortish Creek Oval which should be in reasonable nick despite being under water a week ago.

Not totally unexpected
Did exceedingly well to finish 2nd after minor round after finishing 9th last year.
Playing good footy combined with meeting teams at the right time when they were down on strength with injuries enabled them to finish where they did.
Credit to them
Was always a feeling that it would be a struggle meeting teams at close to full strength in Finals as Compass and Yank were.
Great season for them despite the disappointment of not winning a Final>

Willunga may well join the Creeks in going out in straight sets which would be more of an under achievement.

Compass obviously very warm faves for the flag from here.
