Let’s hope so, but if there’s any truth to the many rumors about some clubs with poor player numbers, it might not be as even as it has been in the past. Only a few more days and we will find out..

I agree bluebagger. The season definitely has a weird feel about it which is understandable. I think by round 3 when some Clubs will know they are not going to make finals the competition in the lower Clubs will drop right off . Anyway we have 9 weeks of minor rounds at this stage so I am calling LC as the flag favourite and Yank at the other end.

Going to be a short and sharp season. Cant afford to play poor two weeks in a row if you want top 3. A lot of clubs have loaded up with players but wont know for sure who the serious contenders are until about round 5. Ill have a stab at the ladder after 9 rounds anyway

Willunga
McClarenvale
Langhorne Creek
Encounter bay
Strathalbyn

Mt compass
Yankallilla
Victor Harbour
Myponga
Goolwa/port elliot

And whoever makes the top 5 i think anyone can win the flag it will be such a tight and even comp at the top. Looking forward to a very interesting season.

Well done for having a go. I have NFI. So many late transfers in (and out) and no idea who will actually take the field of the original recruits.
Early doors I thought creek, Willunga and compass would again be the teams to beat with victor falling away and that probably remains true. Looks like lots of improvement at Yank, Pongy and Goolwa but hard to say if thats enough to bridge the gap.
Agree with your top 7 sides but dunno about the order.

Well 1 round down , what's the thoughts so far ? I know it's only early but wins are essential and 5 teams are on the board . I ventured down to have a look at Yank v Pongy and I must admit I was expecting a lot more from Pongy . Based on what I seen they are going to struggle. They have a massive challenge this week v the Vale . Yank v Strath will be interesting but then I am not sure how much Yank have improved because what i watched on the weekend was very hard to get a gauge on. 4 wins and percentage will probably get you playing finals so its playing catch up already for 5 Clubs . Also did anyone have spectators on the ground during the breaks ? At Yankalilla no one was allowed , is that a Club thing or higher up ? Seemed a bit strange when the under cover bar area down stairs was like sardines ..

I beleive you are allowed on the field for a kick as per return to play guidelines. Just dont attend the team huddles.

However some clubs may impose extra restrictions to ensure compliance.

Not sure how you work out 4 wins with a good % will probably get you in ? It's possible but more likely not to.

2015 was the last season that 8 wins (Equivalent of 4 wins this season) got an A Grade into the 5.
Last year Strath had 10 wins (Equivalent to 5 this year) and didn't get in. In fact it was possible they could have won 12 (equivalent to 6 this year) and they still wouldn't have made it.

Probably fair to say that -
7 Wins will basically guarantee a finals spot
6 wins will very likely get a finals spot, unlucky it wouldn't
5 wins with a big % will most likely get a Finals spot but no guarantees
5 wins with a shitty % may get a finals spot
4 wins regardless of % is unlikely but still possible as in 2015

As usual it's all about a Top 3 spot and 7 wins would be the target for the serious contenders.

My Top 3 at a guess would be Willunga, Creeks, McLaren with the same 3 filling the Top 3 in B Grade.
Creeks B Grade looks as strong as its ever been and may look to challenge perennial contenders Willunga and McLaren . Not that too many care about the Magoos apart from the players themselves.

Round 3 Guesses

E Bay easily over Victor by 76 points
Mt Compass to break the ice with a narrow win over the Mudlarks 14 points
Willunga will be a touch too good for McLaren 22 points
If Yank are to play Finals they need to beat Goolwa/PE Yank by 25 points
Creeks despite missing a few talls this week are faves to get over Strath by 20 points

Being a 10 team comp there is ALWAYS going to be a decisive gap between the top and bottom teams. I think the health of a comp can be measured by how competitive those middle of the road teams are compared to the top teams and generally over recent seasons in GSFL they have been. Last season is a case in point with E Bay finishing 7th but actually defeated the Premiers Langhorne Creek on both occasions they played  :?
Also the fact that perennial powerhouse club Willunga havent won an A grade flag for 10 years indicates its a relatively even comp with really only 2 clubs in Myp/Sell and Gool/PE not being in Premiership contention in the last decade.

Back to the original point of a few blow outs yesterday, the Creeks 113 point win over Strath was certainly a shock, more so after Strath kicked the opening 3 goals of the match
Yanks 83 point win over Gool/PE was maybe a little surprising as well but it seems Lindsey Thomas had a day out for the Tigers in booting 9 goals.

Still 6 rounds to go but im pretty confident the top 3 will be Creeks, McLaren and Willunga with little between the 3 of them with perhaps Yank and E Bay making up the 5 with Compass and Strath narrowly missing out. The bottom 3 in G/PE, MYP/Sel and Victor are probably glad theres only 6 rounds to go as they can already concentrate getting ready for next season.

Not that it will ever happen but it would be interesting to see how L Creek would match up against Hahndorf ? Creeks cleaned them up in the 1977 Hills Zone 3 Grand Final which was the last time they played each other and i'm sure the result would be the same again ;)
