Anzac Day
Wednesday April 25th 2018
Strathalbyn Oval

Strath 17 - 11 Def L Creek 13 - 8

No surprise to see Creeks lose yesterday as they had 4 BIG outs and were always going to be up against it.
The loss barring a miracle has ended their Finals chances. Been a difficult year having lost stars in Sellar, Derham, Kellock and McGregor and then regularly having a handfull of their top players missing through Covid, injuries etc. Yes, they havent been alone there as most Clubs have had similar issues.
The positive for the Creeks is theyre getting games into some talented youngsters who will be the cornerstone of their future success in years to come.

Pongy v Yanks game was an interesting result with what appeared to be a virtually full strength Pongy taking a long time to shake the Tigers. Have the Tigers picked up any late recruits *also note their NT lads that played against Goolwa weren't part of last weeks side?

Rd 13 saw McLaren, Willunga & Myp/Sell repeat their Rd 4 wins in similar fashion over G/PE, Yank & Bays respectively.

Whilst Creeks and Victor reversed their Rd 4 results in comprehensive fashion over Compass and Strath respectively

Creeks avenged their 70 point loss to Compass in Rd 4 by Crushing them by 58 points and keep their faint hopes of Finals alive. Will need to beat Myp/Sell next round tho to stay in the hunt which isn't out of the question if they're able to field close to their full strength team.

Victor avenged their 3 goal Rd 4 loss to Strath by crushing the inconsistent Roosters by 66 points which puts them in the box seat to secure a Finals spot.
Whilst it appears Strath may be left to fight out the remaining spot with E Bay who have fallen off the perch after a promising 1st half off the season.

JJs Suggested Premiership Odds

McLaren $1.50
Willunga $3.50
Myp/Sell $7.00
Victor $31.00
E Bay $41.00
Strath $67..00
L Creek $151.00

Round 14 saw just the one minor upset with L Creek getting out to a 5 goal lead over Myp/Sellicks during the 2nd term and from that point, gripped on to secure a 2 point win to keep their slim Finals hopes alive.
Strath almost did what no other have done so far and beat McLaren. Leading for 3/4s, the Roosters couldn't hang on to see their Finals chances in peril as well.
Victor were having a % booster against Yank before the game was called off early due to a serious injury it was reported.
Can anyone add further to this ?
Bays ticked off the expected win against Compass to consolidate 5th spot for the time being
Willunga added to Goolwa / PEs miserable season with a near 200 point thumping which is never great to see.

4 rounds remain with 7 teams still in the running is great for the comp. I'm predicting the top 5 to finish as it is now but that could easily change on the back of an upset or 2 which invariably does happen.

My observations only - Mid way through the third quarter on the clubroom side wing area a Yank player got caught under a high bouncing ball where upon a Victor player jumped up to punch the ball forward, collecting the Yank play in the ribs/chest area. A pure footy collision with no malice or anything untoward. Full credit to the Victor player as he knew the Yank player was injured badly and stayed with him until trainers etc from both Yank and Victor came out to attend. No scuffles no remonstrating resulting from the collision. Just plain unlucky.

Initially the stretcher came out but it was evident by Yank officials moving to respective vehicle gate access etc that an Ambulance had been called. Unfortunately for Victor (Not as much percentage as they would have got but player welfare is a priority) the Ambulance was coming from Victor as the local Yank one must have been out on a call already. With time already ticking, factoring the time between Yank and Victor for the ambulance to travel plus the time the Ambo crew would need to assess and move the player it was going to be longer than the required time to allow the game to continue. Both teams duly shook hands and that was that.

Bruised Ribs was the outcome, I would say the player would be feeling sore, but maybe a little embarrassed, to have a Ambulance called and a game called off for bruising.

Schlockbuster game at Tigerland today. Can the locals stave off the higher percentage, higher scoring magpies and avoid the wooden spoon or will the visitors score their first win of the season and effectively consign Yank to another last finish for the season?

My tip: Goolwa.

3 rounds to go and with a 2 game and significant % gap between 5th and 6th/7th you'd usually say with 99% confidence the 5 is set.
But although it will probably stay that way it's far from certain
E Bay have virtually sealed their spot with their crucial win over Strath last week, a win against Goolwa / PE is all thats required to rubber stamp it even if they lose to Willunga and McLaren
Victor Harbour have put themselves under a bit of pressure by losing to Compass last week, having to play the top 3 teams in the last 3 rounds. They'll probably start underdogs in all 3. 1 win will probably be enough tho that wont ensure them, could come down to % which they have a healthy gap atm but that could change as Strath and Creek look to have some easy kills to boost their % the next few weeks.
Strath need to beat Compass, then have a % booster over Yank then beat Myp/ Sellicks last game. All very possible
Creek play Yank and G/PE to give them expected % boosters with their stumbling block being Willunga next week.

Tips R16
Creek by 78
Myp/Sel by 89
Willunga by 28
McLaren by 29
Compass by 8

Well that percentage gap has all but disappeared in one week! Victor put on a much better showing against McLaren than the 112 point belting in the first round being competitive all day. Mclaren opened up a 3 goal lead late in the first quarter and every time Victor pegged on back Mclaren answered. Their big fellas in Mutton, Grimley, Merrett and Ellison controlled the marking contests. Victor stuck at it though and Mclaren would have been nervous when Victor closed the gap to 7 points. They also made a mess of a couple of forward thrusts which could have changed the result but Mclaren held their nerve to win by 14.
Victor need to beat pongy or willunga (or both if Creek beat willunga) to hold 5th spot now.

Too hard to predict. Victor, Creek and Strath all have a genuine chance of finishing 5th.
Victor obviously have their destiny in their own hands, beat Myp/Sell and Willunga they're IN
Win one of those games they're probably in
Lose both and they're in big trouble tho could still make it depending on other results.

Agree that if Creek beat Willunga they'll probably make it and deservedly so assuming Victor dont win both their last 2 matches which is unlikely tho certainly not out of the question. Creeks upset Willunga in Round 8 by 1 point when both teams were under strength. Willuinga appear to be a stronger team now than then whilst the Creeks are pretty near full strength as well with the exception of coach Perrey who hasn't played since that Rd 8 clash as a result of a hamstring injury that has just failed to fully respond to treatment which will see him miss the rest of the season. Willunga will certainly start favorite and should they win the Creeks need to limit the loss to as small as possible on the chance of Victor losing their last 2 as well as Strath losing to Myp/Sell and then attempt to wallop Gool/PE in Rd 18.

Strath are also right in the mix as a big win over Yank this week will close the % gap on Victor and Strath would then have to be a reasonable chance to roll Myp/Sell in the last game.

Considering this, and the game was called off at what I'm told was the 8 minute mark of the 3rd 1/4, its a very unlucky situation for Victor if they were to miss based on %. They had 16-15 at that point to 3-2 after having 17 scoring shots in the 2nd 1/4 according to Play HQ, so I think you could safely assume they would have kicked 13-15 more goals.

Which is how it should be for a club that has won 5 games across it's last 3 seasons. Isn't that the whole purpose of how a league allocates points. And of course a club then needs to apply a moral "Compass" to their point allocation.

Mutton Cove - suggest you check your facts. There are 3 teams allocated 17 apps points in the GSFL. Shame there isn't a cap on the brown bags at the Eagles....
