Whats the best game you have watched in the SAAFL/ SFL?

Postby LaughingKookaburra » Tue Oct 30, 2007 2:05 pm

Seen some belters but interested too see what games stick in your memory for classic contests.
For my club Kenilworth it would be the 2nd Semi in 2005 v Elizabeth. Close all day, massive brawl at 3/4 time involving a big crowd and 2 teams well above the rest of the competition slugging it out with Elizabeth just edging Kenilworth out.We met 2 weeks later with the same result.
I also watched Morphett Vale v Reynella on a Sunday at the Vineyard a couple of years ago and Reynella had a shot on the siren to win but it missed. The 2 sides belted the crap out of each other all day, would have been some extremely sore bodies but it was brilliant to watch never the less...........
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

Series of games actually between my club (Old Ignatians) and Woodville South in the one year in 1981 in A4.

We went into the first meeting in round 9 at 8-0 and they were 7-1. At our ground, they completely flogged us.
We went into the second meeting in round 18 at 16-1-1 (minor premiership in hand) and they were 14-3 (could not be displaced from second) and they clearly beat us again at their ground. Huge post-game blue between both supporters, cops called etc. Blue started when one of our guys went to get our ball back (both sides supplied one ball each then) from interchange steward post-game and (so the story goes), bloke threw it over his head. Our guy pushed him, punch thrown, and then 70 supporters boxing on for 20 minutes or so. Nearly all players stayed out of it, but two's players, crowd etc right into it.
Meet the next week in second semi (with plenty of SAAFL senior umps and staff on hand) and we get back lead ruckman who hadn't played either of the two minor round games and we win by about four goals.
Meet again in the GF at Thebarton Oval and it's tight for a half, and we go on to win by 14 goals.
We've won about 7-8 B grade flags since then but it's the last A grade premiership.

Best games not involving my club would be:
1981 Div 1 Grand Final -- Adelaide College beating Riverside by a goal or so. Super game at Adelaide Oval.
1985 - Div 4 Grand Final - Glenunga winning at Norwood Oval

any game that the team I'm coaching wins the grand final. :D V goodwood in '07 in C1 we played above and beyond - I knew we had it won 10 minutes into the first quarter after outscoring them into a massive breeze.

I'd have to say for sheer physicality and tension, uni's one point A1 GF win over goodwood in the driving rain at adelaide oval.
for football talent, goodwood's display last year against uni in the GF was outstanding as were uni v edwardstown in 1996.
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

Adelaide College played in four GFs between 79-82 for three flags and their rivalry with Riverside and Broadview in that period was fantastic. Great games to watch in the September each year after the lower grades had finished and it was actually 81 IMO the best of them, not 82, once I checked.

Riverside and Uni then swapped a couple of GF wins / defeats which were also great matches before the big merger last decade of the three port teams down there. as numbers dropped away. In the 80s, Ethelton and Alby United were usually entrenched in A2, occasionally in A3 while Riverside was a superstar club.

You're spot in there dinglinga, Spence was pretty hard to get past. Unfortunately a bad back forced him out of the game a bit early.

Doc Grigg is regarded as the Raggies best ever player, 7 club B&F's and a SAFA medal in 1994. Clocked up his 200th this year in the C's at age 44, and I reckon still wouldn't look out of place in the A's.

Bit off topic here so I won't go on.

One of the best games I have seen was only a couple of years ago, Athelstone v PNU at Raggiesland, Round 3, 2006. Clubs are arch rivals and hadn't played each other for a few years. Crowd of 2000 plus I reckon (and FC can back me up here) and the game was a cracker. Tyson Burrows kicked 4 goals in the first quarter, PNU up 8 to 1 at quarter time. Raggies back in front at the last change but PNU won it by 7 points.

Details were...
Payneham NU 8.1 10.4 13.6 19.10 (124)
Athelstone 1.2 8.4 14.10 17.13 (115)

Ath Best - S.Thompson, M.Stagg, B.Skurrie, B.Lomman, A.Waldon
Ath Goals - M.Stagg 5, J.Duigan, S.Oatway, C.Whenan 3, M.Constable, K.Hopper, M.Grossmann
PNU Goals - W.Kollias 5, T.Burrows 4, N.Jolly, J.Stagg 3, L.Martin 2, G.McIntosh, T.Pattful

Yep that would have to be one of the best I've seen, and spot on with the crowd too, otherwise the 06 GF v's Pembroke, goal for goal for the whole game...

I'd have to say the final i saw in 2004. Broadview V Sals Nth at Broadview. Broadview had just been pumped by Gaza by 20 goals or soemthing the week before. Went with a mate who supported the Tigers. Down by 40 odd points at half time, they came back to win by 17 points. A genuinely exciting game, and from what i remember the crowd was huge. They beat Gaza the next week by 8 goals (28 goal turn around) and then went on to win the flag.

2 games that the Modbury A grade played in Div 2 in 2006 both @ Modbury.

The First was a draw between Modbury and Phos - a classic game that both team actually lost if that makes sense.

The Seocnd was a win against Gepps when Modbury was 9 goals @ one stage. History will show that Modbury won the game but Gepps got the points.
It is what it is !!!

Salisbury North v Pooraka Prelim Final... a few years back... @ Kilburn

Pooraka up by 10 goals at 3 1/4 time, Salisbury North kicked 11 or something and held them scoreless with Chris Pascoe , an old Pooraka boy, kicking the winning goal much to the disgust of the Pooraka Supporters on the hill and sending Salis Nth into Div 1 for the first time and the Grand Final v Glandore which they lost.

Also Salisbury North v Gepps Cross @ Norwood Oval, Div 2 Grand Final....

Massive blue that included everyone and trainers! Damien Victor for Salis Nth runs into a near open goal that wouldve sealed the game with a few seconds to go but gets smothered by Carmichael (i think) tnen picked up by Hueskes and he runs near on the whole field and passes it off to a team mate who duly kicks the winning goal....

Belter of a game well above the Div 6 standard at the time. It was exiting to watch, couldnt look away, something was always happening.

A very memorable game was D3, 2005,Top v's Bottom, Sacred Heart OC v's Portland, at Portlands home ground. At quarter time Portland found themselves down by 10 goals!! But after one of the greatest quarter time speeches i have ever seen from Portlands coach, which included the punching in the chest of a particular player (the player obviously not performing to the standard he had talked himself to be), over the next three quarters Portland some how pegged it back, narrowly getting over the line. Heard it to be 1 of the biggest come backs of all time.

Some 1 on here may have a better recollection of that day.

Reckon i might be able to top that.

Think it was 2001 where Happy Valley travelled to Shoe oval to play Noarlunga. Happy Valley managed to put themselves in a handy position to be leading by 8 goals at 3/4 time. Unfortuantely they probably needed another few on the board to be entirely comfortable as they ended up going down by over 6 goals.

I reckon it was Old Iggies, not SHOC. We did beat SHOC(premiers 2005 D3) that year at home, but the big comeback was against Iggies. Didnt win too many other games that year, so it was a well celebrated victory !
Im sure Newman can give an even better account of the day, in fact, im sure he could recite the quarter time speech word-for-word
