What is your earliest memory of club footy?

My first and lasting memory was as a 6yr old in 1977 playing under 9bs for the farmers against ttg at ttg. farmers u9bs hadnt won a game for 6 years and we managed to beat ttg 1.1 to 1.0, our coach bought us furry friend chocolates and ice blocks, a day i will never forget.

Same year i played for exerter against the farmers in under 11s as i was there watching my brother and exerter couldnt fill a team.

Late 70's kicking the dew of the frosty Mt Gambier grounds playing U10's for Westies early on Sunday mornings. Club legend Bones Beaton coaching kids, Ray Buckley Capt/Coach of A's, young Nathan Buckley running around in U10's as well. The old long sleeve jumpers that all mini-colt teams seem to have worn with the sleeves pushed up to your elbows trying to look tough. All 36 players except for maybe the FF's and FB's in 1 huge pack going up and down the ground trying to get a touch.

as a player - 5 or 6 at ttg -pertaringa, being told to stand on the half forward flank and stand i did. me and my opponent were much happier throwing mud and kicking water at each other than going for the ball. i ended up running up to the scoreboard and changing it as they had the score wrong. (i was a maths nerd as a youngster). Followed that up by doing the scoreboard with my brother while watching dad play for the gullies and him doing his acl. this would have been 1973.

Great stuff finn - that reminds me of my younger brother he also 'stood' on the HF Flank - watched the ball sail over his head and Dad yelled out "Chase the bloody thing" so he skipped off in 'hot pursuit'...

I remember the 89 grand final demolition of the roosters. To my knowledge port magpie players where arguing for days who let Burton kick that one and only goal. 1990 was also a cracker. Bays were hot favourites with the big man Fidge in the square. When hodges went off just before half time things didnt look good but the big man came back broke the SANFL goal kicking record and led the maggies to a famous grand final victory, they were the good old days.

I was at that game and I remember Rick Davies was the boundry rider (and current goal kicking record holder). I remember the smug look on his face when Scott Hodges went down injured. I think he thought his record was going to be safe. Just think, that record would still be his today if Hodges hadnt come back in the second half. It's been a long time.
