Poker Comps between Amateur clubs in 2010

Postby Iron Fist » Tue Oct 20, 2009 2:09 pm

I heard along the grape vine that a poker company (same as ones that hold pub poker) are looking to bring it into the amatuer league and have games between clubs.

What does everyone reckon about it?
will it or wont it work??

How often should we hold these games??
what nights??

any other ideas you guys reckon???

Fisty

They aren't very good revenue raises if you are a football club that is run by a sports and social club, you have to give 100% of the entry fees back in prizes, the only money to be made is if you conduct raffles and the bar takings (which would go to the governing body).

thats a fair point
what if the poker company looked at a sponsorship type thing
so technically were sponsoring you to have the night?
doesnt the money from the bar get split between the club and community club aswell??

Yes, I'd say that would make a difference as they would have a gaming licence. We don't get any of our bar takings for cricket or football, however, our best player incentives become greater if the patronage is better.

Im pretty sure you need some sort of special gaming licence to conduct a cash game anywhere. think a couple years back a few boys from EFC wanted to organize a Poker night, but hit some sort of roadblock. Bit hazy on the legalities behind it
Would be a great idea if it wasn't for the red tape. Extra night of Bar takings if u did it on a weeknight

The rules have been lifted compared to a couple of years back, 100% of the entry fees have to go back in prize money now.

We held a poker night at Hope Valley this year. I tried to organise one of the pub groups to run it but with what they charged it was not financially viable. In the end we ran our own which is legal as long as the club does not profit from the poker in any way. All the entry fees went back as prizes for the winners and the club profited out of bar takings. Proved to be a popular night and will probably do it again next year.

As for a comp between clubs I think it would be a great idea!
We are a drinking team with a football problem!

I thought the rule was the games had to be free to play at footy clubs, unless the club has a gaming licence? We have no pokies, and when we were looking at the option, we were of the understanding that nobody was to pay anything to play, although we took the bar profits.

If there is club v club poker next year though, I'm sure it would be very well received on Friday nights around the league.

Several of us frequently played poker tuesday, thursday and saturday nights. No money ever went to the club, but it's great fun for the lads who are interested.

We looked into it a couple of years and presented the idea for it to be free, the licencing act stated that because there were "playing cards" involved, it constituted gambling therefore we couldn't do it.
Apparently the Italian club a couple of years ago took them to court and the rules were adjusted, as long as the actual club doesn't profit from the actual "gambling", it is ok to run.
We have had a couple since, they are well ran and our club benefits from them from the var takings and we always have a pretty full house.

in 2010 there will be a inter club poker tournament!!

so far 20 clubs have said yes to the idea and looks like there will 5 or 6 nights played through the year at random clubs throughout the league!

good oppurtunity to get along and meet some oppositon, have a few beers and beat them at something different other then footy

should be good for all clubs involved

From what I understand your information is correct regarding Poker competitions. Basically legal as long as all entry fees are 100% returned in prizes to the players. The Italian club was taken to court, they were charging an entry fee to play a large competition in town and returning about 90% in prizes to the players while pocketing the other 10%. They were deemed to be acting as a gambling house (A casino) and charged accordingly. The way it's presented above, that the Italian club took the Licencing Enforcing Branch to court, is not quite correct. They were taken to court, lost, and the judge clarified the laws which were already in place, making it clear that as long as all entry fees are returned fully to the players it's legal. This is how I understand it anyway, happy to stand corrected :-)
