Future concerns for SAAFL?

Postby Dogwatcher » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:21 pm

Edwardstown is looking strongly at moving to the Southern Football League.
If this move occurred, could it cause problems for the SAAFL?
Many people, on this site, think the SAAFL is underachieving as an administration, while another thing I've noticed on this site are regular complaints from the southern Adelaide clubs about traveling north.
The Southern Expressway has made movement to that part of town quicker - so will this see more southern Adelaide based clubs moving to the SFL?
Would Edwardstown moving result in a second division forming in the SFL and thus encourage clubs in the lower grades of the SAAFL (for example: CLG, Mitchell Park (again) and even Flinders Uni) moving to the league?
Could be an interesting time for administrators of both competitions.

I'm sorry, sorry that I had the temerity to move far away from Smithfield and the likes of the toothless warriors you hang out with. Get in 180y and do a spin around the block ya bogan!

efc were going to do this all last year as well..saying that your points are great DW..the travel IS a concern to us more southern clubs..we had a nightmare draw this year..as i said many months ago when discussing this..would the far northern clubs be happy to see marion, brighton and perhaps hallet cove brought into the saafl?..i think not..well its exactly the same when the saafl brought a whole northern comp into its arms

so..will teams defect to sfl?..will saafl bring in north and south divisions for teams under say div 3?

It's all about money at the end of the day.

the cost to maintain a team in the SFL is a lot more than in the Amateur League which means for teams like Mitchell Park moving won't be an option.

There would also be an issue with junior teams not being affiliated with the right league as far as I know as well. (perhaps someone associated with Metro South JFL can elaborate)

There was also talk some time ago about Brighton joining the SAAFL but didn't eventuate due to this reason.

Kenilworth had to travel to Smithfield, Central United, Elizabeth, Golden Grove, Greenacres, Ingle Farm and Rosewater, all in the space of about 10 weeks, I'm pretty sure Smithfield and Elizabeth were back to back. No wonder their numbers diminished.

Pretty sure the SFL want teams in their junior divisions but Towns wanted to have teams in both the SFL juniors and Metro South. I know they were quite strong on moving a year or 2 ago and they moved it to one side rather than discounted it all together. EFC who is on here occaisionally would know more. Can only see sides moving if they go to 2 divs.

but the SFL needs 2 more teams to join to make it 2 divs of 8 and at the moment only the Towns are remotely interested in switching. No doubt they will consider the move again over the summer but I can't see it happening unless they can convince a running mate to join with them. then there is the issue of rearranging the junior side of the club to fit in with the SFL's setup and then what do they do with the excess players if there is any at all.

so hard trying to get anyone to do anything to "help" out and you find a mate who may help.. and you tell them we are playing at elizabeth or GG and they look at you like your queer in the head !

i know of at least 3 players who had nothing to do with us this year purely over the travel..they have work issues, families etc..i know to be a truly suburban comp it needs northern clubs but its getting ridiculous now with angle vale the new one plus TOS, houghton etc, those clubs are a long way from the adelaide CBD..but if the saafl is going to keep growing the next new teams will come from the south..so will all the deep northern clubs be happy to travel to hallet cove to play a game ? and maybe do the same road trip another 4-5 times during the year ? :)

The SAAFL could do with a few less teams.

Houghton's only about 5 minutes further on that Valleys or TT Gully :? , heading way on down south have to pack a lunch & Anzac Hwy what a nightmare and when you get there see what years of isolated inbreeding do, at least decent arterial roads out north!

Who knows mate, perhaps some clubs might wanna "take their chances" with the perils of Anzac Highway and venture South, instead of heading North and dealing people throwing molotov cocktails at trains?? And don't ambulances even require police escorts now to go to some of your Northern areas - wouldn't wanna get injured in a game up there...

Lay off the South buddy, with practice Anzac Highway can be beaten!

I think the Northerners have enough on their plates with the price of petrol the way it is, you have to steal twice as many cars just to get by.
