Triple Headers - Are they good for the game?

Postby S Demon » Wed Mar 16, 2011 10:56 pm

After some interesting debate on the C5 forum, I thought it would be a good idea to get other poster's thoughts on triple headers that seem to be the "in" thing at the moment. Are they good for the game?

Good idea or passing trend?

Pros and Cons?

What do A and B grade players think of them?

Will playing at 10.15am every week cause players to eventually turn away?

Is it easier/harder to get volunteers?

Is there more money to be made - bar, canteen, bbq?

My view:

Good idea or passing trend? Great idea

Pros and Cons? Lots of pro's (you get a whole day off from the boss (wife) ) no cons (well not many only the hangover after a 8 hour session responsibly i will add)

What do A and B grade players think of them? They get to see fringe players trying to stake their claim plus it gets the sides up and raring to go

Will playing at 10.15am every week cause players to eventually turn away? I dont think it will. More so the guys that work on a Saturday morning. We will have 7 on the bench so it should be covered

Is it easier/harder to get volunteers? Its sometimes the same people. They will just need to split it amongst themselves.

Is there more money to be made - bar, canteen, bbq? Absolutely. They are volunteers no wages paud and the people that they wouldnt normally see buy the foods etc get out and pay. Same with the bar having those extras hang around to watch the higher grades. Except when some clubs have brought their own beer etc. That happened on a few occasions last year. Im not saying we are saints but the boys have said that they dont and wont bring large amounts. The other western suburbs club which i wont name on the terrace brouhgt 3 large eskies and cooked BBQ's in close vacinity to our club rooms. That sort of thing doesnt help the cause.

Plus... When we have the triple headers it gives the volunteers a chance to have the week off when we are away and they can enjoy the day and support the rest of the club. Granted on the weeks when we or anyone is at home longer hours would need to be spent working due to the time frame but as i said above they can split the duties and some start later in the day than others. Sorry to drible on but im very pro triple headers. Some of my gyus said tehy would never get the chance to impress the other other coaches to get into the 2's and so on if they arent there to view. Great for any club that can take advantage of it.

Triple Headers are brilliant. I know that alot of C graders at Walkies love them. Creates a good atmosphere for the a grade game when theres an extra 20 odd blokes around. And if you are able to couple a triple header with another event (past players day/premiership reunions etc) it makes for an even bigger day for your club.

And they are always good for bar takings, you just need to pick another club that hangs around after games and doesnt bring their own grog and food as mentioned above

i think most have covered the pros...
at uni when they first occurred, the b grade played at 10.30 as they were used to playing early while the (c) grade played at 12.30 then the a grade.

cons
early games can often clash with junior school games especially for college attendees.

ovals can be cut up quite badly if there's been rain meaning that the spectacle of the main game becomes less (yes, i know conditions are the same for both sides)

for us, often students work saturday mornings so it can be difficult to get everybody to play. let alone, the enormous hangovers that many face...
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

Maybe the thread and poll should read, should clubs/personnel bag and pester other clubs into a doing something they've decided not to do in their democratic right.

Can't fault this thread, at least it's discussing the topic at hand - and not pestering a particular club.

S Demon knows he'll be benched if he continues the harrasment after he's been asked not to...

Cons 10.15
Limits your potential to earn $$$ or to play more games whichever way you go, if your a Saturday morning worker.
Interferes with your childrens school sport and recreation if your have a family at that age.
Impacts on a clubs ability to field a competitive side if above two is a factor at your club
Often get players playing two games, more injury risk
Volunteers maybe easier to get but some, especially the pivotal ones will be overworked
A very long day if teams are geographically afar ie Trinity vs Plympton
Late game: too freakin cold for elite players let alone C graders, skill of game affected
As for will it lose players, I think you'll lose more if games are set at 10.15 and so on than you will if they stay as traditional

Pros
If coincided with a past players day and or social night they are great
Playing a rival club is a winner ie Rosies vs Havens maybe next year Districts vs Portland, it brings out not just supporters but locals aswell.
More of an atmosphere, probably due to drunken C graders
Appear to make good money but jury is out on that one as the club is open on a Saturday arvo only 9 times a year instead of 18

Until the league put it in as a permanent thing, giving clubs the choice of yes or no is the right thing and should be respected

All for them. As a volunteer/official it lets me go to the away games rather than having to be at the club every week and it also gives the canteen lady a week off.

Some good feedback. Mawson Lakes are having a couple of them this season for the first time, so hopefully they're as good as everyone says they are on here :D

Not a bad idea, something along the lines of "Should Hope Valley pester a club into having a triple header when for valid reasons of their own have declined" but I don't think that thread will last long due to the obvious fact that you guys are anti choice and I don't think the mods will appreciate it
