On Monday morning a ruling was made as to the outcome for the Tea Tree Gully v Modbury Division 1 match on Saturday 25th April 2009 on the basis that the umpires deemed the match had ceased at half time.
On Tuesday morning a request come through from Tea Tree Gully FC to review the ruling as they were of the understanding that an agreement had been made that the game would be called a draw.
Subsequently I requested written statements from the following people:
• Anthony Wesley – Central Umpire
• David Bailes – Central Umpire
• Tea Tree Gully FC
• Modbury FC
All of these statements have now been received and a review has been undertaken. The underlining statement from both field umpires is that even though the lights went out prior to the half time break, play continued. The umpires stated that play continued until an official (runner) approached David Bailes indicating that the quarter had ended and Anthony Wesley subsequently blew his whistle and signalled half time.
When the players were leaving the ground officials from both teams were approached and told that there would be a 30-minute period for the lights to come back on. After this time frame had ended the umpires approached both team coaches and shook hands to indicate that the game could not continue.
The determining factor is the umpires deemed the match finished at half time irrespective of any other factors. Under the Laws of Australian Football, the team finishing in front at half time is declared the winner. The initial ruling stands with Modbury FC being the winner of the match.
