sheeds wrote:Players from those teams _ portland, North Haven, Rosewater etc have 1 thing on their mind - telling whoever wants to listen that a rival club has offerred them money to play. Makes them feel good, strokes their self-inflated egos. I reckon when clubs finally have the courage to tell these players to go-that they weren't that good anyway and we can replace you-then you will see a lot of the talk stop. Reality is, they are offerred between $50-$200 to play and this money will be spent that night anyway, so it's just an ego thing - they want people to know they are paid to play- and they love telling everyone. My answer is this - ask them why would you be paid to play, you're not that good and we prefer players who simply want to be here at our club, not because we had to offer big money. All that will happen is lots of suburban clubs will go broke, or not be able to afford to pay as much and drop down the grades. Proud clubs like Rosewater are an example - once a strong a1 club and now can't get out of div5. Why? because a coach gets the job saying he will bring 10 players so everyone gets excited - those players - generally rejects from other clubs - want to get paid - and only 3 roll up (the worst ones!). Or the club finds they money to pay $350 to a couple of players and then watch them walk when the season is over. Result - no premiership, no players, more recruiting. Look after your own.

you make a good point there sheeds
but I think it is a bit harsh putting Portland in that bracket, they may have in old days but now everyone has come back that played juniors there and we have a good young side/club that wants to play together!!
I agree that paying a player can be wrong and it would put extra pressure on yaself to perform
but then there are other cases where you can see it needs to be done.
What if the bloke owned his own business as a plumber, still wants to play but it isnt finacially viable because he has a family to look after, the club offers him some cash which still wouldnt be as much as he could earn on a saturday, but because he wants to play, he takes that money!
I wouldnt have a problem if that was to happen at my club as long as he was worth the money and wasnt a B grader!!

The other one that intrigues me is blokes who leave a club to get paid more, but don't enjoy it and then head back to their original club - (is that what these Portland boys are doing???)
How are the players accepted back? Any hard feelings?
I was never paid a cent to play footy (nor deserve to) but would imagine the pressure to perform would be hard.
I played with some blokes who were paid and wondered how they felt collecting the cheque when they didn't get a kick or we got smashed... I couldn't do it.

One guy at Portland who wouldnt even hang around for presentations after the game, would go home then drive back and get his girlfriend to run in and collect his ridiculous pay envelope!!! Top bloke, been at about 4 or 5 clubs in as many years

wheres he playing next year at portland still?

He is at Seaton. He has been to Woody South previously, and also played a season in the bush, after the one season at Portland.
Interesting fact is that his girlfriend at the time (who collected his money), is now married to his ex best mate who plays with the Western Bulldogs.

You would think with Tommy Lipson at Portland , Wareing is certain to play there.
I thought Tom had signed and agreed to terms with North Haven?
You would think the Haven committee would be re thinking there decision to appoint the current coach (dont know his name sorry)

Once again Blinkey there is no way he will go to portland. Blake played all his juniors at districts and wants to go back. Also and i know this first hand, he has no intention of playing with jared wareing so obviously portland is out of the running for his services
