Makes them feel good, strokes their self-inflated egos. I reckon when clubs finally have the courage to tell these players to go-that they weren't that good anyway and we can replace you-then you will see a lot of the talk stop. Reality is, they are offerred between $50-$200 to play and this money will be spent that night anyway, so it's just an ego thing - they want people to know they are paid to play- and they love telling everyone. My answer is this - ask them why would you be paid to play, you're not that good and we prefer players who simply want to be here at our club, not because we had to offer big money. All that will happen is lots of suburban clubs will go broke, or not be able to afford to pay as much and drop down the grades. Proud clubs like Rosewater are an example - once a strong a1 club and now can't get out of div5. Why? because a coach gets the job saying he will bring 10 players so everyone gets excited - those players - generally rejects from other clubs - want to get paid - and only 3 roll up (the worst ones!). Or the club finds they money to pay $350 to a couple of players and then watch them walk when the season is over. Result - no premiership, no players, more recruiting. Look after your own.
you make a good point there sheeds
but I think it is a bit harsh putting Portland in that bracket, they may have in old days but now everyone has come back that played juniors there and we have a good young side/club that wants to play together!!
I agree that paying a player can be wrong and it would put extra pressure on yaself to perform
but then there are other cases where you can see it needs to be done.
What if the bloke owned his own business as a plumber, still wants to play but it isnt finacially viable because he has a family to look after, the club offers him some cash which still wouldnt be as much as he could earn on a saturday, but because he wants to play, he takes that money!
I wouldnt have a problem if that was to happen at my club as long as he was worth the money and wasnt a B grader!!
