Saw an interesting umpiring decision in the game @ St.Mary's on Saturday and it baffled a few footy heads.

Bloke from Kenilworth picks the ball up and takes a bounce which he lost control of and it skidded . After it bounced 2-3 times the player was tackled (it happened very quickly) but the umpire called holding the man which caused a near riot as most including myself initially thought he was holding the ball... I then thought that the ball actually bounced more than once and the player then was deemed to no longer have possession of the footy. He was only tackled after the ball bounced twice so you can't really do him for incorrect disposal. I wouldn't have had an issue if he was called for holding the ball by the way... But I've never really thought of this scenario before.

I know there is a couple umpires on this forum, what's your thoughts?

Surely he can't be called holding the ball if he doesn't have the ball?

If he's still attempting to retrieve his shitty bounce, I'd deem it holding the ball.

I ask it because every person I've asked has a different answer.

I can see both sides. Play on would've been my call to be honest.

I was more impressed someone actually caught the bloke. He's a smooth mover....

i would want to see the play as it happened to make my call but from what you are saying i could of called it holding the ball or man depends how far the motion of the ball rolling away had happened

If the player had 'lost control of the ball' and therefore not in possession of it he can't be tackled. Umpire made the correct call of holding the man.

Heard from a source that sailsbury got 4 points appealing tonight if they fail it's 8 points meaning A grade would finish 4th and the b grade will slip to 2nd ! Worth appealing as the a grade can't slip any lower then 4th

i think everyone would know how you feel at this point.......hopefully the kids or young men who caused the problem have to front the board and are shown the door maybe even get them in front of the As and Bs

maybe from this other clubs will think about not fielding a under 18s side not worth the risk
