You can't compare Umpires to Players in the context of this discussion Beefy. I don't think paying Umpires too much money is going to send the game broke, cause the closing of clubs and send the sport into a death spiral with Soccer.

Is there a threshold or amount of money where it changes from "hobby" to "part time job"? I doubt there would be a single umpire that would come close to that threshold. There would be hundreds of players that would exceed it.

No not in that context but in the context of paying tax, workcover, super etc.
There are umpires that will do 2 games on a Saturday and another couple on a Sunday, and any games in between such as carnivals etc. The weekend might net then $300+ tax free. More than the vast majority of players.

Yep, agreed, and therein lies the difference. I don't think anyone from the Commission to the owners of the Tanunda Pub would care if someone earned $300 tax free as a footballer. That in my mind constitutes about the right amount someone undertaking a hobby would earn.

The issue is the minority of players that are extracting close to 10 times that figure, which is why you cant compare them to umpires...

And sorry, but if you're earning that sort of coin eg thousands a week - you should be paying tax.

I'm not a big fan, but if we have to have it, we make it work for footy. As far as the cap amount, I'd like to see it lowered. A lot. $30k should be more than enough for an SAAFL club.

What a lot of baloney! If it's a hobby for umpires, then its a hobby for players.
$30k is one player for some of these far flung clubs. Probably what your mob are paying 2 players alone.

Just trying to keep up with Ro$ewater!

From what I've heard $30k for one player is not far off the mark. This is getting out of balance, I doubt if many top line SANFL players would get this much. Agree with you there being small numbers of players in this bracket, but with 2 or 3 of these per team; that's big dough to raise.

Then they should lift SANFL salary cap

Yeah, lets do that, because ever growing inflation has never been a bad thing, right?

Season 2016 will be interesting for many reasons, not the least because of the new salary restrictions.
Not every club will be concerned about it but the big boys who just don't want to play by the rules will be watched like "hawks" by Big Brother I reckon.

Also a very interesting stance taken by the BL&GFA in not accepting any of the CFL regulations. Keen to see the next league to make the same move or what impost comes out of the SANFL with affiliation and the proceeds of that.

Also closely examining the Chic feed I suspect ;)

More meetings out in the country this week about salary cap. Still sitting at 4 leagues saying no. Our league after sending delegates last week to the big meeting with the Barossa have changed there vote back to no. Wouldn't be surprised if the salary cap is put on hold for a while. Our delegates said the community footy board people at the Barossa meeting weren't happy with the outcome. Just 2 many holes in the document. Hopefully the ammo clubs see the holes b4 voting

According to Shipway tonight, Ammos voted 59-1 in favour

I posted (less helpfully) in the other thread re this.

I think implementing it over two years is wise as for some clubs going straight to $3000 would have caused significant upheaval.

I think for the Amateur League purposes hardly any clubs would be above $4000 a week and players above $500 a week so this really won't affect anyone in 2016.

The increase in incentives is a bit of a cop out in my view.

5. Only employment with the football club will be assessed to ensure they do not exceed market value; previously it was suggested that all outside employment contracts would be assessed.

And this one is close to the rub of it. Ah well, it was a nice idea.

Summary of amendments-

1. Maximum total player payments per match has been increased from $3,000 per match to $4,000 per match in season 2016, and will be reduced back to $3,000 for season 2017.

- Limit of $500 for a player and one Marquee Player up to $1,000 per match remains the same.

2. Marquee players may now be registered any time before May 1, this was previously restricted to before round one of the Affiliated League home and away season.

- Marquee players may be replaced any time before June 30 only if the original marquee player relocates for employment or suffers a season ending injury; this would require CFL Investigation Committee approval.

3. Incentives are increased from $250 weekly to $600 weekly, with a maximum of $300 in value that can be accrued.

4. Any payment or contribution made in compliance with the super guarantee charge to a Superannuation Fund will not to be deemed a football payment. Any amount paid above the super guarantee charge will be deemed a football payment; previously all superannuation payments were included.

5. Only employment with the football club will be assessed to ensure they do not exceed market value; previously it was suggested that all outside employment contracts would be assessed.

6. Income protection up to $1,000 per week, for 52 weeks, for any injury sustained while playing football will not be deemed a football payment.

7. Insurance reimbursement will not be deemed a football payment.

8. Payments made to players for representative football will not be deemed a football payment (up to $150 Association, $300 Zone, $500 State).

9. Milestone payments up to $500 will not be deemed a football payment; milestones are every 50 games and must be played in the A grade team for one club (may be accrued to pay up to $1,000 for 100 game milestone).

10. The heading for penalties for a breach of Regulation 31 now includes the word ‘deliberate’.

It's okay, you'll get your $500 a week and then you'll just happen to be in the best players every week so there's another $100, then you'll mysteriously pull your hammy the week you play the bottom side and you'll be unable to work so there's another $1000. You'll also have your health insurance paid for and get a nice little bonus in your super account. I think you may even be better off ;)

Yep. Only change is redirecting cash to super and reimbursing for supposed income insurance.

* Bump *
After more consultation on the weekend it seems as though the leagues have 3 weeks to accept the new rules or be disaffiliated.
3 leagues holding firm and ready to walk despite all the bluff.
Will be interesting to see the outcome
