Field umpire always has "right of way" on score decisions. Goal umpire is essentially there to signal the result and record it, or provide the field umpire assistance on the call in the event the field umpire didn't see it.

You will see field umpires say all clear to the goal umpire with both hands up (goal), one hand up (point), or no hands up (didn't see it, you're call).
The third instance is the only time the goal umpire gets to make the decision.

So a field umpire who is standing at the 50m arc makes the decision for a goal umpire who is standing at the goal line? There is no way the field umpire can say conclusively that the goal umpire got the decision wrong.

In that instance the field umpire would most likely have both hands down on the all clear, handing the decision over to the goal umpire.

That said, I'd have to back LM in on this one!

LM, can you please explain why the need for different "all clear" signals from the field umpire given it is the goal umpire who makes the decision? Refer bottom of page 70 here

It's more of an interpretation thing and reassurance to the goal umpire incase it was something quick or a difficult angle.

Two hands up shows the goal umpire that the field umpire is certain it was a goal, one hand up lets them know that the field umpire thinks it's a behind and no hands or a bit of a shrug of the shoulders can indicate that the field umpire isn't 100% sure from their angle.

Although Goal Umpiring is seemingly easy, there are times when the doesn't go where you assume and you sort of rely on player reactions and help from the field umpire to make the right decision, as a field umpire, especially in A Grade games, there would be one or two a week where I I'd call out "all clear, your call".

Goal Umps should have whistles too IMO, for when the ball is in dispute close to the line, the field umpire is trying to watch the play and the goal umpire and missing a signal immediately can cause all sorts of pandemonium.

It's easy as pie (and a lot of fun) 98% of the time and utterly impossible for 2% of the time.

I've had situations where I admit I have absolutely dead set guessed based on the body language of players and would challenge anyone to be certain about a decision. A quick snap out of a pack 15m out that goes anywhere near the post is impossible to know - especially if like many suburban grounds the posts aren't much taller than you. Look to the field umpire and they're giving you nothing ... if the defenders look disappointed and the attackers are celebrating... goalski.

This is why I will always celebrate if I am forward and look to quickly gather the ball if I am defending for close goals. Look like a goose but I reckon it's swayed a cutla over the years.

I heard you booked a dirty weekend away with the wife, believing Houghton to be a push over and the result a mere formality that didn't require you wasting 2hrs of your life watching?

How arrogant of you! ;)

Zartan predicts D6R
* Brahma Lodge to beat Pulteney this weekend.
* Other winners - Elizabeth, Trinity OS, Fitzroy.
* Austin Bailey (Elizabeth) to win the association medal.

Granted Brahma would need some players to return, but i think they'll match up well against the Blues.

Brahma are more physical, are a lot taller side, and have some very experienced and talented players through the midfield and halfback, and when full strength a very potent forward line.

Kurtis Smith will have a day out, and Antonio Cavallaro, Matt Leigh, Daniel Hickey (if he comes back down) & Jason Marshall is a strong quartet.

If Phil Hall & Adam Freeman return, suddenly you have those two plus Josh Corbett, Quiniton Taylor and Kaine Arbon - its a very dangerous forward line - and very difficult to match up on.

Niblett, Gehlken are reasonable players across the half back line, and if Nick Hall plays, that frees up Kurtis Smith to perhaps play CHB or CHF with Corbett moving down back.

Also think recent results show Pulteney as susceptible - perhaps getting complacent with the ease of standard in D6R?

It is a pain when the seasons drag on for a few extra weeks - we don't all have the luxury of having a month off before cricket and football seasons start like you..

And yes it's true, any person with half a brain would be smart enough to disregard what I say haha! :D
