A question for anyone that might know the answer. In a ball up contest is there to be only one player from each side contesting that ball up. I have seen in the past a third player come over the top but on the weekend i was squashed between two henly players that were both contesting the ball up i had no chance what so ever of getting to the ball.  When i looked at the umpire he said to me that if that team wanted they could have three up i reckon this is crap but im probably wrong. Also in the game there was clearly a point scored because the ball bounced off the goal post then went through for a goal the goal umpire was in the wrong the field umpire seen this but said he could not over rule the goal umpire i thought he could. Probably wrong again. Does anyone know the answers to these questions.

Not sure about the ball up, pretty sure the field umpire can't over rule the goal umpire though

Laws Of Australian Football 2008
11.3.5 Contesting the Centre Bounce
(a) The centre bounce or throw up shall be contested by one
nominated Player from each Team. Such Player shall be
nominated to the field Umpire prior to the bounce or throw of
the football. The Player contesting the centre bounce shall be
positioned in his or her Team’s defensive half of the Playing
Surface and with both feet within the 10-metre circle. The
Player may only enter the Team’s attacking half after the football
touches the ground in the act of bouncing or leaves the field
Umpire’s hand, in the act of being thrown up. The Player shall
not be permitted to block an opponent’s approach to the contest.
The Players must have both feet inside the 10-metre circle at
all times until they contest the bounce or until the Umpire calls
play on due to an “offline bounce”. No other Player may enter
the 10-metre circle until the football touches the ground in the
act of bouncing or is thrown up by the field Umpire.
(b) Where a Player contravenes Law 11.3.5 (a), the field Umpire
shall award a Free Kick to the Player on the opposing Team
who is nearest to the Centre Circle.
(c) Unless otherwise determined by the Controlling Body, where
the field Umpire bounces the football off line, the field Umpire
shall immediately call “Play On” and the football may be
contested by any Player.

12.1.5 Goal Umpire to Judge Goal or Behind
(a) The goal Umpire shall decide whether a Goal or Behind has
been scored but may, before deciding, consult with the field or
boundary Umpires. The decision of the goal Umpire shall be
final. The goal Umpire shall only signal that a Goal or Behind
has been scored when the field Umpire signals “All Clear” or
“Touched All Clear”, as the case may be.
(b) Law 12.1.5 (a) does not apply if a Controlling Body prescribes
that a field Umpire may overrule the decision of a goal Umpire
who has not been appointed by the Controlling Body.

Hope this helps.

I was pretty close to the goal in question and was not convinced that it hit the post, but when your own goal umpire is giving us goals that go over the post - what can you do? With the ball up, this has been a issue of mine for a while since a similar thing happened last year that resulted in a goal for the opposition. The only problem with TruRoo's rule explanation is that the rule quoted refers only to a Centre bounce, not a bounce in general play. Perhaps it is a rule that needs to be looked at (just what we need, another rules change!!!)

Shark_Hunter,
Went through both Amateur League rules and the Laws Of Australian Football and could find no reference to a Bounce or Ball up in general play. By that I assume as many players as they like can contest the Ruck. Don't need to go back to Junior Rules where the Umpire picks two players to contest.

Most AFL teams use it as a tactic called "third man up"

True, we don't want junior rules, but blocking or holding a player from the contest should not be allowed?

Yeah dont mind the whole third man up thing but like shark hunter said when your ruck man hasnt even got a chance at the contest because he is blocked out the way while another player has free run at the ball its crap.
