SAAFL U/17's & U/19's

The 19's comp will be a waste of time as expressed earlier by other people, any players around 18-19 will be playing B grade or A grade for their club. the proposed times are not spot on also as that is also a good time for the youngsters to work and earn some money. Shadiac and Co it is time to hear the frustration from people that play the game for a SAAFL club or are involved in a volunteering way also.

Cheers for all the feed back boys & girls as it is good to hear everyone's opinion which seems to be very similar on that the SAAFL should not run an U/19's as most clubs will not vote for this as it will ruin the atmosphere of Saturday Senior Grade Triple Headers but the SAAFL should keep their current format with 2 x U/18's Divisons (Blue & Yellow) that it currently runs as it does this well & maybe include a Sunday U/17's competition as this seems to be good interest out there from alot of other clubs in feilding teams especially with no SANFL U/17's anymore & is gathering real momentum as i think they could accomodate this as the club im involved with is pushing for this to happen also, they should leave the rest of the Junior Football to be run how it is currently by Metro South, Metro West, Central District & North East because they do a great job at this & maybe is an option for these leauges to run a U/17's? Hopefully the SAAFL can make a decision before the end of the year so the clubs have time to put plans in place!

Roaring Lion just letting you know that Metro South ran a 17's comp this year with 5 teams involved, we are hoping to increase that to at least a 6 team comp in 2009. We are happy to accomodate North East Metro next year if the clubs agree to join the 17's competition.

from this weeks SAAFL newsletter

"Under Age Competition

It would seem by the number of responses to date that an Under 18 competition(s) (20
teams) will be retained in 2009 on a Sunday afternoon. There may still be a possibility
(although remote) for an Under 17 competition (currently 5) on a Sunday and Under 18
competition on a Saturday (currently 4) but we would need at least 4 and 3 teams
respectively in the remainder of the late submissions for each competition to confirm
their viability."

The SANFL have just changed to an 18's comp from 17/19's..
The AFL have 18's
Most country leagues have 16's/18's

So the SAAFL were actually going against the grain all to accommodate the college teams. I believe though, that it did have something to do with the WAFL having 17/19's too, not that I see how that affects us...

*URGENT REPSONCE REQUIRED FOR SAAFL U/17's COMPETITION IN '09*

For any club in the SAAFL in the wishing to nominate a 17's team this must be done ASAP!

Please contact Brenton McDonnell from the SAAFL by Email brenton@saafl.asn.au before the leagues AGM on Monday the 1st of December as this is the day a decision will be made on weather they will run a U/17's Competition in '09???

The league will be keeping both U/18's Competition for season '09 & the U/17's Competition is an extra which 8 clubs have nominated but the league needs 10 teams to conside running this so if your club is interested can they PLEASE GET YOUR CLUBS NOMINATION IN ASAP otherwise there will be alot of young fellas who will miss out on playing footy next year!!!

FITZROY! MODBURY! PANEHAM NORWOOD UNITED! PHOS CAMDEN!
INGLE FARM! PARALOWIE! HECTAVILLE! TEA TREE GULLY!

These are the 8 clubs have already nominated but we need at least 2 more to make this happen!

Thank you.

Wow, it's gonna suck being a PHOS under 17 player next year if this comes to fruition....

PNU have nominated U17s every year for the last 10 years and have never got a team together because College and SANFL footy chew up their stocks.

So if history repeats, that will still leave only 7 teams.

For god sake the economy is worse than bad - how can any responsible organisation (SAAFL) even contemplate having an U17 & U19 competition. The reason that the SANFL League clubs are getting rid of the two grades and the VFL did it in the early 90's, is essentialy the costs associated with having the two grades. With so many clubs - and in some cases so many clubs, all within striking distance of each other, all seeking the same Sponsorship and financial dollar to keep their clubs afloat how could the SAAFL even have thought about doing it. The cost of ovals, jumpers, equipment, umpires, footballs, coaches, etc, etc, etc just makes it cost prohibitive. Every other League in the country gets rid of the U17 & U19 concept and the Amateur League decision makers want to take it on board. MAKES LESS THAN NO SENSE but what else could we expect. Surely after finishing Under 18 Football and being 19, the following season any
young lad is capable both mentally and physically to play against men.

i am very surprised that PHOS has nominated for the SAAFL U/17's for 2009 when they are looking at having a U/17's team in Metro South in 2009.

Actually we haven't the SAAFL got the wrong end of the stick. We said we were happy to stay where we are. On a side note Kookas are Edwardstown still going to have a 17's in Metro South?

We did our homework on this because we have almost enough to fill a U/17 as well as U/18 but....... it's going to cost about $5K-$6K by the time you buy new jumpers, a coach, umpire fees, medical, trainers, and all the stuff a team needs and you get back about $2500.00 in subs if you're lucky.

If the SAAFL would subsidise the idea, we'd have a go but these lads can take their chance in the U/18's, it's already established.

Incidentally, how many of the clubs that have nominated U/17 also have U/18, not too many I'll bet!

If anything, I would think that it would be smarter to coincide with the SANFL and have 16's & 18's, it would be the best way that league clubs could monitor possible recruits and fringe players. As amateur clubs, the aim is to try and produce as many SANFL/ AFL players as possible.

So what do you do with the 16 or so 17's aceman, yeah some would play 18's but that still leaves lets say 35 lads wanting a game with 25 spots open if you just field the one team.

Play the ones that are up to in the B grade/senior sides.

If you have alot of guys who are still u17, the side will be even better next year for the u18 comp. Obviously Sheik, you blokes had a strong u16 team this year ?

Having u18s and u17s is a bad idea.
