I had a discussion with someone from SAAFL about how it would affect college sides
He said that if the club declares itself purely amateur, the points system would not apply to that club

As far as I am concerned, and I have said it before, I would suggest someone who comes from our school would be 0 points but we would suffer the points on outsiders like everyone else.
Plus, if they played juniors at a district club, they qualify for 0 points for them - and why not - it means they have played 2 games per weekend. Going to be good for PNU and Walkerville who get a lot of college kids playing for them

That is how I understand it. Full amateur status would have that club free of the points system.Jimmy_041 wrote:White Unicorn wrote:Would need to know hoe it would apply for College sides. Seems like the WAFL have a good system going over there, so teams can't load up with too many ex-AFL players. The points systems over here are only for A Grade sides, won't have any implications for B/C/D Grades.Benchwarmer wrote:The system has worked well in the WAFL this year - made the comp much more interesting. Clubs can flash the coin but more importantly they have to work on list maintenance. The WAFL system is different to pretty much every other comp in that they have the points allocated up front pre-season and if they recruit guys during the season they have to maintain their status under the 130 point barrier.
IIRC, the WAFL system for clubs in '09 had 130 points spread across its nominated 55-man list. 10 for ex-AFL players not going to original club down to 1 for local-bred player. Penalties for going over included no external recruiting from outside their zone for 3 years and a 120-point cap for the first season "back in the loop". So much fairer and less stockpiling of talent at the expense of locals.
I would assume that the system for multi-team clubs like the SAAFL have would apply on a weekly basis (like most leagues do) per side. Makes it fair enough and helps clubs to reduce overspending for a flag at the expense of long-term viability.
