Probably all in one game against the Lodge. :D

My point is, the game has evolved a fair bit and has cleaned itself up compared to the 80's & 90's yet there seems to be more horrific injuries than back then.
I wasn't covering myself in glory, I was just saying looking back on it now I was extremely lucky to get through without too much lost time for work, I wouldn't for the life of me play uninsured nowadays.

Then again there's different diagnosis's for injuries.
Now= PCL
Then= Very sore leg

Now= Osteo Pubis
Then= Pain above the tackle

Is that alright for you Mr Hard Ball Get? ;)

I have convinced my boss to allow me to work on a commission only basis for people from the SAAFL.

This means that I can help anyone looking at something like income protection by comparing the different products available and finding the cheapest option with the most suitable cover but be paid by the insurance company rather than the client.

This also means that If i can't find something that suits then I don't get paid. Luckily I'm not restricted to a certain product like you will find with a Financial Planner in a bank.

If someone feels that they need this cover but doesn't know where to start or even if you want to make sure that your cover is still the most cost effective option then send me a message and we can organise to have a chat.

A little bit of information for those who currently have income protection or are thinking about it. I have done some research and AMP is the only product in the market that will cover Tradies for income protection without special conditions. Every other product I spoke too either give a 25% loading on the premium or have a 90 day waiting period for any injuries through football.

I retract my comments on JLT from last page, it appears as though I was wrong and they did process a claim that I thought they had denied.
Their payout was very little compared to the costs that the player had incurred but I guess given the amount of players they cover in comparison to the premiums they have to protect themselves aswell.

The premiums they charge are less due to the amount of players they cover - group discount. JLT probably have their own insurer also, who they pass on any claims to.
My club pays the additional upgrade amount to try to reduce the amount players are left out of pocket. Do other clubs do this?

Your right, JLT would more than likely use a reinsurer due to the amount of people they cover. however the payout levels would be pretty low in comparison to other insurance companies that may have million dollar life insurance policies on their books.

Mr Beefy, does your club then pass on that extra cost to the players when working out the subs each year?

We insure a couple of lads for income protection and it's not cheap. Definitely not something a club could afford to do for all of their players at the club. We pay around $900.00 for each player which covers them for the footy season only.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

I've never heard of that before, is it a cover that stops in the off season or do the players take up the payments when not playing?

Not really, I've worked it out in the past and cant remember exactly, but it would be around $2 per player per game. I think that was for the highest level of coverage. Ours subs are pretty low compared to a lot of clubs but I guess it also depends on what is included in subs.

Insured for 6 months which is basically the footy season (sorry, should have worded that better).

seems like a lot of money for only 6 months of cover. What happens if they are in a car accident during football season or fall of the ladder, then they are just as screwed.
I would have thought it would be better if the players got a proper policy and then you just reimbursed a portion of the cost during the season.
The player gets cheap income protection for outside football and it would probably save the club as well.

They are insured for anything else that happens during footy season as well. Not specifically football, but we only cover them for 6 months. Either way, it's still expensive. Especially if you're an apprentice etc and also have to meet monthly private health commitments etc. It all adds up

That's why I use my super for income protection, prevents cash flow issues.
