That sorta money isnt that well paid at Div 1 level, let alone in the lower grades.

they could you know
e.g. Jim Beam can's. They'd be picking up a carton of 24 for around $60 i guess.
Selling at $5 a can.. profit of $2.50 a can
Only need to sell 160 cans of beam a week.
2 teams, only 4 cans a player a week lol!!!
And apparently a sponsor is forking over the cash directly to Mr Shephard to play... thats what I heard anyways. Probably trying to get rid of some excess cash come tax time!!

The other thing about the sponsor would be spot on mate! I know of some major sponsors who place contracted players either on there employee lists and pay them to make it look like wages, then they make claims at tax time along with claiming back things such as training and development costs etc or they can use the contracted player as consultant to their business and claim it as an expense all the while paying the paid player in lump sums. This is also done in country clubs with vehicles where sponsors buy a vehicle and register it through the business, claim shit loads back - everything from mileage to depreciation while the contracted players use the vehicle.

But... IF they were to be caught out (audited) it still can be very hard to prove. Nothing can happen to the club as they cant be tied to who paid what if money never went through the club. The TAX man would only be whimpering if it was copious amounts and then would suggest it be border line fraudulent behaviour however any decent accountant can probably do a good job to cover tracks.
Just goes back to the ol' clubs with money get more for the dollar than those that dont.

Sports clubs are what small and regional towns thrive off so money is a necessity and for others it simply board farmers and stockman who have nothing else to do with the cash so they pump it into a club.
