Sounds strange but he kicked 5 and struggled a bit. :? Had a cracker burst of about 3 goals in 3 minutes in the 3rd to really help turn the game but just needs to work a bit harder over 4 quarters and lift his intensity a bit in regard to contests, chasing, pressure. But he should keep his spot for round 2.

I'm amazed he kicked so straight

Yeah, he didn't get much (any) of a pre-season, definitely not a lazy kid, I think he was just enjoying a summer with no committments after studying his behind off for his year 12 exams.

They are a team full of older guys (compared to our kids) and this experience and strength showed. I cant say they have alot in the B's to come thru, and definitly not alot of young kids, but in the main game we were simply smashed. They were clean, aggressive, moved the ball well and finished well. We had alot of younger lads who were roughed up and pressured into poor decisions and poor disposal and I think this aided the Roys cause greatly. Mind you, our skills and turnovers were terrible and we were bitterly disappointed in this part of our game which is usually very good but obviously the pressure put on by Fitzroy highlighted them more. We got within a goal early in the last but a couple of great bits of play by them with the wind at their tails saw them grab momentum and run away with it.
Losing our CHB very early in the piece was a huge loss as was a few late withdrawls. We showed some good signs but the difference was our poor skills and decisions and experience.
Late in the game turned a bit ugly but you get that sometimes... Fitzroy did what they needed to do to win and take the points. Can't say the two midgets in orange had the best of days but i doubt the result would have been affected. Fitzroy deserved the win and if we take anything out of the loss it's that 2009 aint going to be an easy year. But we never expected it to be easy anyway so the hard yards continue on the track this week. Put it behind us and think about the next game I say !!

Any examples there Choccies? Even though its clear your not blaming the midgets, but its easy to have a dig

Just inconsistency with interpretations mostly and then when things got willing late in the game a couple of incidents right in front of them were ignored. One that lead to one of our young lads being knocked unconcious especially.... But as I said, it wouldnt have affected the result and they were too good for us !! Simple..

Just wondering if it was the usual suspects for Fitzroy on the weekend or are there some new faces other than Pearce to look out for?
Did Ben Hart play? is he going to play?

In answer to the fitzroy question....no13 (dont know a name) was easily there best on the weekend. They are a well drilled unit. Play a very well structured zone across the ground and look to use to corridor on all occasions. Our skills were horse shit (and thats being generous) so our movment was innefective and didnt force them to be accountable when we rebounded. When we turned it over, they had so many loose men as there zone allowed it. With our players, particuarly our midfielders commited to our run forward, they moved the ball quickly and easily. A very beatable side but they did well to rough us up on the weekend. Get on top of them early with score board pressure and get inside their heads is the best way to beat this side. They like it when things go there way so being proactive rather than reactive in regards to hard tackling and hard ball gets should see you in good stead.

I look forward to the next encounter.

Burraboys, we lost to Fitzroy round 1 last year too. It was a great game that day, i think we were 6 goals down early in the last quarter and lost by 1 point. Had a chance to win it after the siren, but the kick fell short. They are a very hard team to beat at home, the Lions.

Maybe you guys losing is an omen - look where we ended up last year... ;)

Was at Fitzroy - GG game. Roys have retained all players from last season except for Coulter. Sok will be back about round 6. Had added several handy recruits on the weekend and still have a few players to come back in. Their Forward line is very strong and efficient and will be stronger with Hart back.
Golden Grove were very quick in the midfield and had a lot of the ball all day. They just lacked someone up forward to finish. I expect this will change when their full forward comes back in. Should be a great game v CBC next week.

I was only there for the third quarter and was mainly watching GG as we have them next week.

Ben Hart didn't play and I didn't see him on the sideline although he may have been there

They were a much larger side all over the ground than GG, however GG apparently lost its CHB early in the game. Scott Peterson dominated in the ruck for GG

When Fitzroy went forward, they easily beat the GG backline. Too many options and too strong

They always went through the corridor (which was good because if they went on the outer wing, no-one would have seen the game)

Overall, they were without Sok Sauce but have picked up some similar sized blokes. Good hard team who used their size to intimidate and bullock the ball along

Having seen both your teams on the same day - I'd say you are quicker and probably around the same size. Coopers Stadium is also much bigger than the Fitzroy kopje, and you will be playing on The Barton which is a factor.

Going to be a very hard match for Jimmy to pick the winner............

If i told you what i really thought about the umps performance on the weekend id probably get a card/infraction from FC.

Ill leave it at that

Umps weren't the reason we lost. We played poorly. They didnt help the cause though.

As a neutral observer - one guy was a tad confusing, the younger bloke not too bad.

But being an ex-umpire (and standing with another umpire at Fitzroy), I would always qualify any comment with "what you see on the sidelines, is very different from what the umpires see from 10 - 20 metres away"

When I was watching, there was only a couple of goals in it, and I dont reckon the umps made that much difference, mainly because Fitzroy just had to get it within their 50m and they usually scored, whereas GG were struggling to find a focal point. They need that big mofo back asap (Not next week, hopefully)

I have heard about a few things late in the game, but I wasn't there. That's when it gets interesting with the umpiring, and whether they are strong enough to assert some control
