What does this actually mean? Last year Mitcham & CLG were 4 wins ahead of the rest. Marion went into the finals as 3rd seed and finished 3rd. Great effort after coming up from D6 the year before. They’ve improved again this year although that could be more a case of a weaker D5 than recent years. But well done to a club that was going nowhere in the SFL. They’ve now gone from D7 to D4 since joining the league in 2018.
Marion 30 years ago would have been one of the strongest 10 senior football clubs in South Australia. They are strong financially, have a massive following and it’s only a matter of time they become a powerful D2-3 club consistently. The ammo’s structure does really suit those inner southern metro clubs that seemed to struggle in the SFL over the last 20-25 years - Mainly their juniors always seemed to lag behind with the Saturday juniors structure because in large the influence of private school football. The demographics are the further south you go it becomes more like country footy - Even that’s getting tested compared to decades gone by. Sunday juniors seems to really resonate with the inner south metro clubs more do compared to Saturday.
