This will be long winded, so apologies.

I've umpired for a while, maybe 5 or 6 years, after being unable to play anymore due to knee injuries. I started out as a club umpire for our 2's then tried my hand at SAAFL umpiring last year which i enjoyed but couldnt put in the hours for training etc due to work. This year i've gone back to the Club and umpired 2's and 3's again.

I've found that the lower the grade i've umpired, the worst i've felt that my umpiring has been. As a player i was good at reading the play, getting in the right positions etc. Essentially the best umpires do exactly that (allbeit in a different position to where the players are of course, but still the best possible position to view the contest) but going down to C Grade and try and get yourself in the right position... the ball ends up 30m somewhere else, then your stuck in no mans land chasing the ball...

Another thing i find amazing is the amount of players, supporters, etc that yell and scream till thier blue in the face, and to be honest they quite simply do not know the rules. They believe that just because they've played the game all thier life, or watched it on tv, that automatically the rule book has been downloaded into thier brains... WRONG!!!

Its a bit like the fact that if most drivers out on the road today that have had thier licence for 10 years+ would probably fail a driving test if they had to sit one now...

I generally have a bit of a quip with the players but always try to make it in good taste and in jest, no malice, but occasionally subtly pointing out that what the player is asking for is rediculous.

Umps shouldnt swear, but hey, they are human, and who knows, someone could have run over his cat yesterday just after he found out his mrs is rooting his best mate. Give him a break, trust me, we put up with plenty!

If you are not swearing or yelling at an umpire in any way at all can they send you off?

Scenario, free kick given against a player. umpire says hanging on. This being one of several bad calls. Player says "give us a chance" and "that was not a free kick" in a completely non threatening manner. umpire threatens to send off. player argues he is not swearing or being abusive, before realising that it doesn't matter what he does or does not say, if he p*sses this bloke off he will get robbed for the rest of the day. Player shuts up before being sent off by angry little umpire.

Player left wondering are umpires a law unto themselves?

Sounds like the only mistake that was made here was that the player didn't quieten down when he was asked to. If he had have stopped, he wound not have been sent off and there wouldn't have been a problem.

What the send off was for is irelevant.

player to ump: bla bla bla

ump to player: no more bla or ill send u off

player to ump: bla

ump to player: see ya in 10.

I saw a shocking decision on Saturday

3rd quarter McLaren Vale v Yankallila

MV ruckman running up from behind, eyes on the ball, arms in the air, takes a mark over the Yank ruckman.

Push in the back.........

Right in front of me and the crowd.

I'm a Yank man but I turned to the MV bloke next me and just said "That's terrible"

Where are the AFL taking this game? Its why I dont go and watch AFL games. But it looks like its filtering down the ranks

Nah mate - my chariot makes a WRX look awkward

Mrs Jimmy said I wasn't allowed to play golf when I gave away footy, so I just never gave it away

Lucky me i made the budget!!!

Just if anyone else reads my post and requires it to be explained to them, the crux (gee i hope i spelled that correctly, i really do...) of the paragraph was to explain that while many have played the game for a long time, few have actually studied the rules.

Not once was it implied that any old joe from wherever-the-hell could walk in off the street, read the rule book, and instantly be the next Peter Carey (not the glenelg great, the other one).

I thought that selective quoting and half-arsed journalism was confined to those at 31 Weymouth Street, but obviously i was wrong. But thats ok, never let brains get in the way of an average story...

An interesting line came from the mouth of an umpire during our game v Adel Uni last round.
When things were getting a little heated, he was heard saying "Just get him after the Game" to one of our guys.

Acceptable??

I'm sure he was taking the p*ss Ambo. Surely he said it in jest.
I could imagine a few umpires up here saying that sort of thing.

piccachu wrote:i was one of the players who came out on the sunday and sat on the the hill to support our under 18 lads and not only was his umpiring decissions terrible but so was his behaviour.
i can tell you that we used no abusive language as we were sittin reasonable close to women and children, he sent a player of ours of early in the game for swearing when this player returned to the oval he called out throw as everyone does when they feel someone has disposed of the ball illegally the umpire then said i have had enough of you and sent him off again, this lad who who was sent off twice played in our grade side the day before, he is a good kid and he has never been sent off a football field in his life before this day.
i think you can tell what kind of person someone is when they change there name to flintoff after an ashes series, what a knob.
and if he is to send someone off the field for swearing, you would think its not aloud for himself to use the same profanities

Ahhh it all makes sense now. This person is a disgrace and shouldn't be allowed near any sporting fields at any capacity. Absolute nightmare. Try playing indoor cricket with him as an umpire. You better off just having the 2 captains play rock paper scissors over every decision. You would get more right that way.
