What's the relevance of when the last SANFL playing coach was to this discussion? If you remember correctly my query was about the supposed redundancy of playing coaches at Div 6 level as suggested by Jabber and endorsed by you and simply compared it to when playing coaches were more common in league footy.
You still haven't answered my question.

Are you suggesting Division 6 in the SAAFL is equivalent to SANFL coaching demands of a time when playing coaches were in vogue, pretty simple question, if you can't answer it just say so.

I'm suggesting that the fundamentals of coaching a football side don't change all that much at any open age level. The skill level, speed, tactics, etc of course do, but the fundamentals of coaching, match ups, best players for best positions, realising that a player may need to be moved etc, etc, does not change.

I also suggest, and this is a random generalisation, that players in your particular div, and ones above it, and ones below it, and in other comps, don't ALL have the discipline of that of a SANFL footballer, even back in the day, and before you fall of your chair i'm not talking about thuggery discipline, i'm talking about fitness discipline, knowing when your team needs for you to have a break discipline, team orientated disciplines, teams are not overrun with those types of players which make a playing coaches job easier.

Scott Leal is a playing coach for Broadies in Div 2, and they're sitting top of the ladder as well. When we had a player/coach a few years back we went up three grades in three years. I don't there's necessarily a blanket rule saying 'çoaches shouldnt play'. It all depends on the man in question I would think.

Yeah i was definately generalising, no doubt.

and there are good ones out there, no doubt as well.

But more often than not these days it does not bear fruit.

Jabber - why is it "highly unbelievable" to think that a Div6 A grade team couldnt beat a Div1r team?

Have you played Div 1R?

Sounds like great news for BL, The bloke definately has got you guys up and running this year. But from what I heard from several players they had little remarks about him. Not too sure if theres any tension between him and the players at all?? Comments to the effect of - he yells and abuses everyone when he gets frustrated and then that frustration goes away as soon as he kicks a goal. The word selfish was also used. I don't know too much about him so I can't comment. But it was just what i heard. Anyone tell anymore?? Good luck to you guys for the rest of the year, definately the team to beat.

Back to what started the last 2 page debate. This will be payneys last year as an A grade player/Coach (has said this a few times so may change). I believe he will play 3 quarters in the ressies next year then coach the A's.

Watchdog i will ask you this question. Name the last coach you played under or knew of that had 100% support from every player at that club. Like every club, people will have OPINIONS on who should be in and out of the side. BL is no different. I know there have been weeks where i have scratched my head at things that are going on, but thats why we play football for the unexpected. Payney is also very lucky to have 3 very adequate and passionate people to help him out on match day.

On the payney yelling and abusing thing. Yes he can lose his head and yes he can yell but you have to take in to account that he probably the most passionate bloke on the field every saturday. The bloke lives for footy.

Everybody who knows payney knows how much he loves to win. Sometimes he gets caught up in the moment and lets his heart rule but within the next 5 minutes he will be able to think the whole process again through in his mind and relay to the person what he did wrong, how he can fix it and what to do next time. He just gets caught up in the moment sometimes but this is one area he has improved on as the season has gone on.

Lastly i just want to finish this by saying payney is a very selfish footballer on the field. This is not a bad thing. The man is put in a position to kick goals and win games of football and thats what he tries to do. I know payney will think he can kick a goal from any position on the field. Sure he might get 30% - 50% but at least he is getting the football to have the shots. I know i would rather payney have the ball in his hand on the boundry line come finals time with a game on the line than any other player. Do you call didak a selfish player when every time he's in range he has a shot?.

Anway enough about payney. While not 100% perfect a bloody good bloke and coach.

Bloody hell i hope he dosen't read this and good am i going to cop some sh$t from the boys about this.

lockleys have west croydon away, CLG at home and mitchell park home you'd probably think win 2 of these games and they are in.

west croydon have lockleys at home, B/L away and CLG at home very tough run home probably cant make it the losses against m.park and paralowie are going to cost them there season.

paralowie glenunga home C/U at home heccies away probably the best run home of the sides it may come down to percentage so playing glenunga and C/U may help dont deserve to play finals but who knows they may just make it.

what are peoples thoughts now on who will finish 5th?

Paralowie have the better run and will gain some confidence inthe next 2 weeks. I think they will be the 5th place team and could give the final 5 a real shake. May have to play trinity in the elimination final in the first week. After the weekend will they have a mental edge?

I am not bagging CLG or Harvey at all when asking this but did he play injured at all on the weekend? Just would have thought that Harvey would have spent some time in the middle on the weekend? Also can i say how good it was to be involved in a very hard and passionate game of football on saturday. CLG showed great heart on the weekend to show up on what would have been a rough week for them, a put up a fantastic effort. I am sure we will meet you at some stage during the finals series.

Horses for courses i guess, but at Plympton Jeff Winton, Matt Copping (i think it was matt), Paul Harby, Tony Elletson, Gino Pegoraro, Shane Sinclair, all in the last 15 years, none took us to a flag, and the higher the grade the more you would get found out i reckon.

i think the player coach system can work depending on the assistant on the side lines.....

i asked the question because no-one CAN remember..thats my point..its outdated as shown by how the best do it at their level..so no ..of course div 6 is not the same as sanfl as far as time goes..i just dont think it makes for great coaching at an amateur level..there will always be exceptions

Well, the above post will certainly mean you will have a few footies kicked at you tomorrow night you suck hole.

Anyways, on the Payney issue, I for one watch the games and think Payney is a toss for his carry on, but he is obviously a very passionate person, will win at all costs and this is his way of venting as he expects perfection. I am waiting for the day someone has a go back at him when he stuffs up, this person would want to be fairly game and have a secure spot in the a grade.

Without doubt, Payney provides the greatest X factor for the team comes finals. I think Payney's influence on the game, especially when he moves into the middle as he becomes a goal kicking midfielder, cannot be overlooked. Sure, there's Sibbs, Ronald McDonald Hayes, Brett "Dream Team legend" Aldridge, Nathaniel "My hands are bigger than Walton's ego" Solly and Shane "Brendan Fevola" Brown, but Payney has the ability to win games off his own boot.

I have the feeling this season may be the redemption for Payney from EP's smashing in the Div 3 GF last year. Sure it's different teams, but Payney seems to have a point to prove. Probably wrong, but that's the way it seems to me. He had little influence over last years GF as he was only coach and Flinders Park played such a good game it didn't matter what moves he made, this year if they make it he can have an influence on the ground, and if needed provide the spark for the team.

My thoughts anyways.
