I went and watched that game Friday night. I havnt been around amateur footy as long as a lot of people on this forum, but Henley's A grade would have to have the best foot skills I've seen at this level.

Quite simply on their day would knock off a couple of SANFL sides

knock em off at what though? marbles?

Good side, but that is garbage garbage garbage. The Eagles are bottom in the SANFL and Henley would not beat them in their wildest dreams. The Eagles won a flag last year. Plus many of SHOC's A grade played in Div7 in 2011.

How big would you rate the gap from the 2 leagues though?? Is it as big as it was 10 years ago, bigger or roughly the same.

One thing I have noticed since I have started is the standard of lower grades has improved out of sight, do you think this is the case in div 1 also?

BOP, couldn't agree with you more. I was in a discussion with a former AFL / SANFL player several weeks ago and this exact same topic came up. We were both in total agreeance that the best Div 1 team would struggle to beat the worst Reserves side in SANFL. The major reason would be the commitment to football hence fitness. The speed of the game at the higher level is so much quicker than Div 1. It is very difficult to judge when you watch the respective games individually. Having said all this, I love being on the mound at my local footy club, barracking and watching the games they produce. But to quote Andrew Gaze "Turn it Up".

I would say that the top couple of div 1 sides would knock off the bottom 4 reserves sides, but would struggle against the top 4. also depending on the size of the ground with smaller ovals suiting the older bigger bodies of a div 1 side, and the bigger ovals suiting the younger, fitter, more skilled reserves sides.
but league sides, forget about it.... we'd be no chance.

well why not compare the Eagles Full back on Gaza's full forward or henleys

or Gaza's centre half back on Adam Grocke

or St.Peters Centreman on Justin Ciccollella

match em up

I dunno
after seeing helneys side on friday night, I reckon they would be able to knock off a few of the lower reserves sides for sure, and depending on the oval, give the better sides a good run aswell.
Just have a look through the team list, at least a 3rd of the side has league or reserves experience and apart from a few they are still a relatively young side.
get on board the thunder train!!!

most of the guys i have spoken to that have SANFL league and reserves experience have said that the top few sides in Div 1 from past years (ie. henley, shoc, gaza last year) would sit easily in the middle of a reserves competition.

Henley have upped the game this year with foot skills...i would be of the view they would touch up at least half the reserves sides going around...and give a few league sides a run for their money.

Would be good to see the top Div. 1 side gain promotion to the SANFL, they need a 10 team competition again, the only other option really is to locate a Gawler a based team.

I have always wondered if a Div 5 side could knock off a D1R side...

u look at div 1 teams about 1/2 of there players could play reserves footy if they wanted to but thats the reason the dont play is simply because they dont want to, there is some very talented players out there that could go out and play league but just dont want to if u did a combined div 1 team vs a combined reserves team i think u would find it would be a very close game
